I've been using the Lumia Icon for a while, but recently switched to the Hulk, also known as the green Lumia 1520. I didn't back up and restore any of my previous items since I wanted to start fresh. I've noticed my new Start Screen is different on the new device, so this is a perfect time to show it off.
Need a quick workout without any equipment? The #7 WorkOut app for Windows Phone can help. Based on the 7-minute workout featured in the NY Times, this app features several exercises with a simple, yet very appealing user interface. We've installed it on the Lumia 1520. For those who use the Facebook app for Windows Phone, the official non-beta version received a small update today to version 8.3.3 up from 188.8.131.52 back in September. This version bump puts it slightly ahead of the public beta version, which sits at 184.108.40.206.
Is Sony making a Windows Phone? The rumor started to get serious way back in December 2013, although, since then, nothing substantive has come about, suggesting either the info was bogus or talks fell through. Indeed, Sony has spun off their PC business recently, suggesting a cooling with Microsoft in general, (and forfeiting any future tie-in).
Now, Sony has an app for Windows Phone but before you get too excited, it appears to be nefarious tool to get you to switch from Windows Phone to Xperia with Android. The app is dubbed Xperia™ Transfer Mobile and it is part of Sony's program to ease those coming from iOS, BlackBerry, and now Windows Phone onto a new Xperia with Android.
Nokia has updated its HERE Maps app and HERE Transit with new train and transit information from Deutsche Bahn in Germany, allowing users of the Windows Phone apps to access train connections and timetables in that country.
Our Windows Phones can be rather convenient at times, from checking the weather to sending a quick email to even casting a little light on things. Lightbox Pro is a Windows Phone utility app that offers eight different ways to use your camera light and phone display to light things up.
From the basic flashlight to a party ball, Lightbox Pro hopes to be your one and only Windows Phone light source. The app does have a certain level of appeal but a poorly designed trial version may likely turn many away.
Update 2 Microsoft has just informed us that the game "was briefly made available in the marketplace for Windows Phone customers to download and play for a short period while testing." So it's only available in a few markets until it completes the company's certification process.
Update: Currently, the game appears to be US-only.
As previously announced, Microsoft has launched a new entry in its long running Zoo Tycoon simulation game series, Zoo Tycoon Friends, as a free-to-play game for Windows Phone and Windows 8.1 devices.
Windows Phone Central App Roundup: Weather Apps
Weather apps seem to multiply faster than a burrow full of rabbits and are one of the more populated genres of apps in the Windows Phone Store. You have feature rich apps that not only deliver the current and extended forecasts but also live weather radar, weather videos and the ability to track the weather for a friend's location. Some can add your current weather conditions to photos and others are more minimal in nature.
The choice as to which likely boils down to personal preference and for this week's roundup, I'll toss out my top Windows Phone weather apps. Now before you break out the pitchforks, light the torches and begin posting "How could you miss (insert weather app title here)!", these are titles that I find myself relying on in my day to day activities. There is a huge selection of quality weather apps available in the Windows Phone Store and if I don't mention your favorite, there's nothing nefarious afoot.
NFC Safe is an interesting Windows Phone app that allows you to secure important date, images and credentials on your Windows Phone. The app utilizes your Windows Phone's NFC abilities to create a NFC Tag key that will open the app. Otherwise, your information is locked up and secure from prying eyes.
NFC Safe includes OneDrive support to back up your information, Live Tile support for direct access to folders and you can create multiple NFC tags just in case you are prone to losing things. It's an interesting app and a handy way to keep things private on your Windows Phone.
In case you missed it, Creative Studio has just been updated to bring back Color Pop. This feature lets you create black and white images with the exception of certain objects. If done correctly, you can come up with some awesome photos. I walked around New York City today and took some photos with the Lumia 1520. Check out some of the images I've created and my 5 tips with Color Pop.
Starsports.com is an online destination that brings live sports action on Web and mobile for Indian viewers. After being available for iOS and Android since the launch almost a year ago, the app has finally landed on the Windows Phone Store.
The starsports.com app allows you to enjoy all the action from your favorite sports on your Windows Phone device. The app allows you to follow the match the way you want – you can get instant score updates, watch the important match moments though short video clips, or watch the entire match for free with a five minute delay.
Burgers fans, rejoice! The official app for home delivery for McDonald's – McDelivery – has finally arrived on the Windows Phone Store in India. The McDonald's Corporation is the world's largest chain of hamburger fast food restaurants, serving around 68 million customers daily in 119 countries across 35,000 outlets.
The app allows you to order your favorite McDonald's burgers or meal right from your Windows Phone device. Unfortunately, the app works for only a few cities in South and West India.
This morning, HTC has pushed out the first update to their Dot View case for their One for Windows on Verizon. The app update refreshes the Dot View configurations under settings and brings with it three new options. The update matches the Android version, which itself was updated in July to deliver the same three new options.
Starting with this update, users can now choose a wallpaper to be displayed when the Dot View case is enabled. As expected, the wallpaper is pixelated to match the Dot View design. Users can choose up to 19 different wallpapers, or they can add their own to the mix.
A fresh batch of minor updates for Lumia phones has landed this morning. These updates apply to two system apps – Network+ and Rate Us – in addition to the optional vehicle assistant Lumia Car App.
First up is Lumia Car App, which is going by a new name with Lumia out in front instead of the previous Nokia moniker. As far as we know, this is the only change in this app and is a continuation of the de-Nokiafication of Lumia-specific apps in the Store.
Over the summer, Roku officially released a Windows Phone 8.1 and Windows 8.1 version of their Roku app, which turns your device into a handy remote control for your Roku device.
The Roku app has a simple interface and will automatically detect your Roku devices. We've been using it for about a month and find it to be a nice app to have handy for situations such as when you've lost your Roku remote, too lazy to get up and get your Roku remote or are in the mood to battle your better half with dueling remotes.
Blinkbox Music is a music service by UK supermarket Tesco.
