Starting about ten days ago, reports that Samsung was pushing out Windows Phone 8.1 Update for ATIV S users began circulating the 'nets. We have our own ATIV S here in the house, which is an unbranded UK release, and were not able to get any such update. Instead, we are stuck on Windows Phone 8.0 GDR3 (Build 10517; Firmware 2424.13.10.1).

As it turns out, a very select few ATIV S users are getting Windows Phone 8.1 Update (Build 14157; Firmware 2424.14.9.3), which is splendid news. The bad news is it is isolated to specific regions like Austria and maybe Hong Kong.

Samsung ATIV S devices released through carriers and most other areas are not seeing the update yet, although obviously this can change. Let me try and explain and give you the full story.

It is no secret at this point that the Nokia name was going to be eventually supplanted by something else. Nokia lives on as a separate company, while Microsoft takes ownership of the Lumia brand and brings the new employees into the fold.

Speculation about the name change has been going for months but on October 21, Microsoft made it official by stating the new name will go from Nokia Lumia to Microsoft Lumia.

Tonight, the Conversations blog has more on the name change, including what it all means.

Weekly photo contest: Boats

I'm on a boat! Well, not really, but you might be. This week we're going to go out and capture some boats for our weekly photo contest. Those boats don't have to be in the middle of the Pacific, as you can see the image above here is on dry land. Just go find a boat and take a cool picture with your Windows Phone.

POP Messenger is a new app in the Windows Phone Store. It comes to us from Pinger, the company behind other popular apps like GIF Chat and Doodle Buddy. POP Messenger allows you to easily create and send customized visual text messages. You just pick a font, change the background color (or select a background image) and send the POP to a friend.

Windows Phone users currently do not have an official YouTube application, but there are third-party apps available. One of those awesome apps is Tubecast, which we've recently reviewed. If you haven't installed it yet, you definitely should. It has an amazing feature that lets you "cast" videos from your phone to the Xbox One. Don't believe us? We'll show you how it works.

View is a new Behance app in the Windows Phone Store that you're going to want to check out. Behance is one of the most popular platform for artists to promote their work. It looks like the New York Police Department has begun piloting some Windows-based smartphones and tablets as part of a new initiative. The $160 million funding for the 41,000 new mobile tech tools used by officers comes by way of the criminal asset forfeiture funds from the district attorney's office.

A few days ago, I managed to pick up a Yoga 3 Pro to review for the site. See my unboxing and tour here if you missed it. I am still feeling out the ultra slim Ultrabook, but I can already answer one question for you. If you are choosing between buying the Surface Pro 3 and the new Yoga, you should pass on the Lenovo.

This conclusion is not to say the Yoga 3 Pro is bad, but rather I so far find it underwhelming. Let us compare.

Yesterday we released updates for our official Windows and Windows Phone apps for the site. No new features were implemented, but the branding was updated throughout both apps to reflect our recent name-change.

Unfortunately, a missing "/" character from the code caused the Live Tile and notifications to break in the app. You can file the mistake under rushing to meet a deadline, but the simple forward slash omission had some drastic ramifications, to say the least.

Beginners' Tips Series!

One of the many conveniences that the Windows family of products offers is the ability to receive notifications from apps on your Lock screen. These Lock screen notifications appear under the time and date on your device and give you a quick glimpse of any new emails, updates, events, etc. The notifications await your acknowledgement without having to log in and open any apps.

In Windows, you are limited to a total of seven apps that can notify you via the Lock screen, while Windows phone keeps it to a maximum of five. Since some apps come with Lock screen notifications enabled by default, you could find yourself running out of options. So we threw together this quick guide on how to choose which applications appear on your Lock screen.
