A lot can happen in a week. New apps join the Windows Phone Store or Windows Store. Your favorite apps can get a big update with a new look or new features. Device rumors come and go. Seven days might not seem like much, but it can be an eternity in the tech news cycle.
Every week we're going to compile the biggest stories into one post, so you never fall behind – In Case You Missed It (ICYMI).
Yesterday, Microsoft let loose the latest overhaul of the nascent Windows 10 operating system aka build 9926. There are hundreds of changes throughout – some big, some small – but one interesting find you may not yet have noticed is the new OneNote for Office Touch.
Although it was known that the new Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint would not be in this build, the status of OneNote was not heavily discussed. Most of us presumed that the same touch-friendly version of OneNote would be included, but instead we are getting a peek at the new Touch Office version.
The Microsoft Store website is currently holding a special sale on most models of the Surface Pro 3. The sale ends at the end of the day today, but until then four of the five versions have a $75 discount.
Activision has released yet another trailer for their upcoming Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare DLC pack, known as 'Havoc.' The new pack is due for launch on the Xbox One and Xbox 360 on January 27. This time, the trailer features a humorous live-action clip that shows us who really controls and creates those cool KillCam shots.
Windows Central Roundup: Top Windows 8 Games
We are taking a slight change of pace for this week's roundup. Instead of focusing on apps for Windows Phone, we are going to take a look at a few of the top rated Windows games.
An HP Stream 8 tablet was left under the tree with my name on it this past Christmas. While my Windows Phone is my primary device for gaming these days, I'm finding the 8" Windows tablet can hold its own rather well. I think in many respects a tablet is more amenable to gaming than a laptop or desktop, especially when touch screen controls are in play.
I've plucked four gaming titles from the Windows Store (plus a few honorable mentions) that I have found to be nice gaming options when you need the elbowroom a tablet offers. Many of these gaming options are available for your Windows Phone and I'll add the download links with those titles for the Windows Phone Store and make not if the version is available for low-memory Windows Phones.
Made from multiple thermoacrylics, this Lumia Icon skin case is highly elastic and resistant to oils. Say goodbye to annoying fingerprints! The back features a matte finish with a glossy edging that enhances the grip around your device. Get yours today and save 50%
One of the prominent new features in the task bar in the Windows 10 Technical Preview is the Cortana search box to the right of the Start button. It's a really great tool to have close at hand, but, it does also use up quite a bit of real estate. So, it's understandable you might want to make it go away – especially if you can't use Cortana right now.
Fortunately, that's really simple.
Famed game designer, and former Microsoft executive, Peter Molyneux has offered his own opinions on the recently revealed Microsoft HoloLens holographic headset, stating that the company should be careful not to over-promise the capabilities of the device. Ironically, Molyneux has had a long history of doing that very same thing with many of his games.
Appy Weather is a somewhat modest Windows Phone weather app that delivers the forecast with a slight personal tone. It presents the forecast conditions in your traditional sense but adds how the expected conditions will compare with the current. The minimalistic design looks good and while there are some features we'd like to see added, Appy Weather does a very nice job of things.
The Windows Phone app has seen a flurry of updates over the past months that have added new features and customizations to the mix. The most recent update pushed out this morning sending the weather app to version 1.3. The version 1.3 update for Appy Weather most notably adds the ability to re-organize the settings menu, more options for notifications, and severe weather alert notifications.
If you are into the sport of cricket, World Cup 2015 is right around the corner with opening matches scheduled for February 14, 2015 in Australia with the final match being played on March 29, 2015. If you need help keeping track of all the World Cup matches, there's a Windows Phone app in the Store that can help you out.
World Cup 2015 Calendar Sync is a Windows Phone app designed to add all the match dates to your Phone's calendar. It is an easy way to populate your Windows Phone calendar with match timings and venues so you never miss a single bowl.
If you're looking to become an Amazon Prime member, now is the time to do it as the retailer is offering the annual membership for just $72, down from its usual price of $99. In addition to the discount on the membership, Amazon is streaming all ten episodes of its original series Transparent for free to non-Prime members on January 24.
Microsoft caught us off guard somewhat with an earlier than anticipated release of the new Windows 10 Technical Preview. Due to land next week, it pushed out earlier today to Windows Insiders allowing eager enthusiasts to get their own first look at the latest incarnation of Microsoft's operating system.
But, while all insiders can download and install it, that doesn't necessarily mean that they did, or are going to. So, did you install the new Windows 10 Technical Preview?
One of the many new parts to Windows 10 is the Store. In the latest Technical Preview we get a first look at the redesign. Functionally it's basically the same as the existing Windows 8.1 Store at the moment but with a substantial visual overhaul. Gone is the green and in its place comes flat gray tones.
It's still in beta – as is pretty much everything in Windows 10 right now – so anything and everything is still subject to change. But here's how it looks right now.
If you are on the brand new build of the Windows 10 January Technical Preview and you are also in the US with US English enabled, you are lucky enough to have Cortana too. Cortana is Microsoft's increasingly universal personal assistant found on the phone and now Windows (she also powers Maps too in a future update).
Did you know Hey Cortana is also available? Found on the Lumia 930 and Lumia 1520 with the Lumia Denim update (see our demo), Hey, Cortana lets you call up the assistant just using your voice. The feature is disabled by default, but here is is how to enable it.
InstaWeather Pro isn't your typical Windows Phone weather app. The Windows Phone app lets you snap a photo, add an overlay of your current conditions and share the final image with your friends quickly and easily.
InstaWeather Pro makes it easy to not only share how good or bad the weather is but also lets you add a photo that will show off the conditions. The Windows Phone app normally runs $.99 but for through the myAppFree campaign, you can pick it up for free over the next twenty-four hours.
The Penny Arcade Expo, also known as PAX, is a videogame and board game-themed fan convention that takes place in a variety of regions across the US and even Australia. The first ever PAX South is currently taking place throughout the weekend in San Antonio, TX at the Henry B. Gonzales Convention Center. Your man in Texas, Paul Acevedo is right there hunting for choice gaming scoops and interviews.
Microsoft itself has a relatively low key presence at PAX South, but they have teamed up with Undead Labs to offer an early taste of State of Decay: Year One Survivor Edition to the masses. Newly upgraded for Xbox One, State of Decay looks and plays better than ever. Read on for my full impressions and video interview with Jeff Strain of Undead Labs!
After an exciting week of Windows 10 news, we briefly divert your attention to Windows 8.1 and some apps that may interest you.
We have another potpourri of apps for you this week. There aren't any games, but rather, five intriguing apps that you may find pretty useful.
