When the BBC recently launched overhauled versions of its iOS and Android news applications, many voices were heard questioning why there was no love for Windows Phone. At the time the BBC was clear about its direction with its newest mobile apps, but with the latest update there might be hope for the future.

Back in December, we brought you the news that Sygic was poised to bring their GPS Navigation app to Windows Phone. For the last few weeks, it has been in an active private beta but today it is available to everyone, worldwide.

Sygic GPS Navigation was the first Nav app for the iPhone back in 2009 and today their app is powering 75 million users on Android and iOS. Now, Windows Phone users get access to Sygic's extensive mapping data (provided by TomTom), which excels in regions where others tend to fail, especially in Eastern Europe. Sygic also has an attractive speedometer app for Windows Phone that can be much fun.

I have been using Sygic GPS Navigation for a few weeks now, and it is something to try.

Latest AdDuplex numbers reflect Microsoft's gains from yesterday with the Lumia 535 becoming a hit

Yesterday, Microsoft released their FY2015 Q2 numbers demonstrating year-on-year and sequential growth for their Lumia smartphones. Although selling 10.5 million phones in one-quarter can be seen as a drop in the bucket when compared to Apple or Samsung, it is rather impressive. Microsoft posted gains during a time when the OS is in transition, and no new Lumia flagship was announced.

This morning, AdDuplex, who runs a very popular cross-promotion advertising network on Windows and Windows Phone, posted their latest stats about the ecosystem. Collected from 4,995 different apps (not users) the AdDuplex report paints what is considered the most accurate picture of the landscape.

The story is the same, in many ways, from previous reports: low cost and budget phones rule the roost for Windows Phone. This time, the Lumia 530 and Lumia 635 make significant strides globally while the Lumia 535 is taking off in India.

More information about government surveillance has come to light, and it seems that the British and Canadian governments apparently used special software filters to acquire sensitive smartphone user data from the servers of a number of advertising and analytics companies. The program, called BADASS, gathered unencrypted data sent to the companies from mobile devices, including those running Windows Phone The data collected by these companies can give whoever is looking at it a lot of information about individual users.

Microsoft is rolling out a firmware update for the Xbox One controller that enables the controller to connect to the console in roughly two seconds, down from the five or so seconds it used to take to pair previously. The firmware update also brings a host of user-requested fixes along with improved stability.

Update: Both social networks are now functional again. If you can't access them in your region just yet, hold tight. Services are being restored.

Facebook and Instagram, the popular social network and it's photo-centric sub-division, are currently experiencing a denial of service attack that's affecting access for some users. If you've been trying to check your feeds and you've been getting errors, don't worry — it's them, not you.

Update: Belfiore took to Twitter once again to clarify that existing 7-inch devices will still be able to keep the desktop and take advantage of Continuum (thanks to everyone who tipped us on this).

Even after the recent Windows 10 event and the quantity of new information we received, there are still questions to be asked. Microsoft's Joe Belfiore has clarified in a Twitter conversation which devices will see the desktop with Windows 10.

Microsoft's Fiscal 2015 Q2 results are out and as the first set of numbers after the holidays we've got a clearer picture of how well Xbox performed through the busiest shopping time of the year. The numbers are generally good, with massive unit sales coming despite a drop in overall revenue.

This is in no small part due in both cases to aggressive pricing throughout. In the period around Black Friday and into the Christmas period, the Xbox One could be had with substantial discounts and there will have been a lot of consoles sold without Kinect. All-in-all great for getting the console out there, not so great for the immediate revenue figures.

Microsoft's FY2015 numbers for Q2 are just going up, and the numbers for Windows Phones are a bit complicated.

Revenue itself for Windows Phone is down a massive 61% from the last quarter. However, before we declare everything a failure for Microsoft, they explain away that number from the loss of $650 million from Nokia. The agreement had Nokia paying Microsoft per quarter, but that venture has since terminated. In other words, since Microsoft took over the Nokia mobile division, it can no longer collect that lump sum of money since they are now their own customer.

Interestingly, Lumia phone sales are up, both for year-over-year and sequentially from last quarter.

Microsoft is releasing their Q2 Fiscal Year 2015 results, and the numbers are quite good, despite some ominous decreases in revenue (due to sales or acquisitions).

The Surface line has officially crossed the billion dollar mark for revenue demonstrating a 24% growth from the previous quarter. In other words, the big holiday season looks to have been successful in pushing the Surface Pro 3, which drove the growth, into more hands than ever.

Finally, we have our first real week of game releases on Xbox One and there are a couple that you probably haven't heard from. The biggest release of the week is of course Dying Light which is the only AAA game of the week as well. We also will finally see the release of #IDARB this weekend as it will become available for free as February's Games with Gold game.

However, these games are not the one that I'm anticipating the most from this week's lineup. You're going to have to continue reading to figure this one out.
