Google buys Nest, but a Windows Phone app is still possible

145

Right now, Nest is one of the coolest companies involved in home automation. Their rock star product, the Nest Learning Thermostat, has been winning awards and praise from users since it launched. We’ve had a few Windows Phone apps in the Store, but they’ve been pulled by Nest. We’d like an official Nest app for Windows Phone, but that probably won’t be happening anytime soon. Google just bought Nest for $3.2 billion dollars. All hope is lost right for anything on Windows Phone? Nope, sign up for the Nest Developer Program to get access to their web API.

Review: Mugenizer N11 Portable Wireless Charger Power Bank

23

While portable chargers or power banks are ubiquitous among smartphone users now, there’s a new range of such devices which bring the advantage of wireless charging, a feature trend that is gaining popularity especially in Windows Phones in last 18 months.

These are essentially the portable power packs that you can carry around, but without the need for wires. When you want to charge your phone, you just lay it flat on the brick. While the Nokia Lumia 920, 928, and 1520 (non-AT&T models) can charge natively, the Lumia 720, 820, 925, and 1020 can use optional shells to enable the Qi feature.

Few months back, Nokia introduced DC-50, a $99 wireless portable charger that packs 2400 mAh battery. It was followed by the announcement of a similar product by Hong Kong-based Mugen Power. I’ve been using the Mugenizer N11 portable wireless charger since a few weeks, and it is one of the two chargers, the other being a Nokia DC-18, I carry with me when I head out.

Nokia has previously instituted advertising on the web version of here.com, but the service is also available on Microsoft's mobile OS. Nokia is now evidently moving to mobile to provide relevant adverts in search results, presenting users with related companies or points of interest. It's non-intrusive advertising with some decent functionality to offer, but users are are mixed on the idea.

Read on for all of the details.

BlackBerry CEO confirms BlackBerry Enterprise Server support coming to Windows Phone

62

In an exclusive interview with our sister site CrackBerry.com, the new CEO of BlackBerry John Chen confirms that BlackBerry Enterprise Server support is headed to Windows Phone. No ETA for the popular backend service was mentioned, but Windows Phone, like Android and iOS are certainly on their radar.

Considered middleware, BlackBerry Enterprise Service (or just BES), is an industry leading and trend setting messaging service that also support calendar and contact support. Similar in nature to Microsoft’s Exchange, which it also supports, BES has been the backbone of BlackBerry’s success in the past. The company is hoping to reinvigorate their enterprise offerings by refocusing on what made them strong in the first place.

Nokia Lumia 525 – Unboxing and hands on with the low-cost 1 GB Windows Phone

127

Taking a look at Nokia's problem-solving Lumia 525

Last year, Nokia introduced the Lumia 520, a lost-cost solution to those who want a Windows Phone in emerging markets. As it turns out, demand was much higher than anyone anticipated. Nearly a year later and the 520 is one of the best-selling Windows Phones around. It’s a great low-risk way to experience Windows Phone and it opens the door to higher end options. But if the Lumia 520 had one flaw, it was the amount of RAM.

Windows Phone 8 can run easily on 512 MB devices, but some higher end games (and a handful of apps) need some good memory optimization before they can run smoothly. That usually happens, but it can take months after the initial release. Microsoft is confident this will go away as developers target 512 MB devices in the future, but up until now, there hasn’t been a low-cost 1 GB Lumia to get around this problem.

The Lumia 525 fixes that by simply bumping the RAM to 1 GB. So, can lightning strike twice for Nokia? Watch my unboxing and first impressions of Nokia's device to find out.
