AT&T continues to throw the switch on 4G LTE

AT&T expanding their 4G LTE Network

Just the other day we shared that AT&T flipped the switch on the 4G LTE network in Birmingham, Al. and Memphis, TN. For the Windows Phones that are 4G LTE compatible, the new network speeds are simply fantastic.  In many of the tips speeds have more than tripled by going from 4G to 4G LTE.

Since lighting up the Birmingham and Memphis area, AT&T has been busy adding the wireless network to several other cities and regions. We have received a large number of tips from happy Windows Phone owners in these areas and thought we'd update you on AT&T's 4G LTE progress.

Here are the cities we know that have gone live since Monday.

  • Honolulu, Hawaii
  • Seattle, Washington
  • Pittsburgh, PA,
  • Portland, Oregon
  • Metro Detroit area.

It is our understanding that by there are forty-six cities and regions slated to get 4G LTE by the end of 2012. Those remaining on the list include...

  • Albuquerque, NM
  • Allentown, PA
  • Boise, ID
  • Charleston, SC
  • Cincinnati, OH
  • Columbia, SC
  • Columbus, OH
  • Denver-Boulder, CO
  • El Paso, TX
  • Fayetteville, NC
  • Fort Myers, FL
  • Gary, IN
  • Grand Rapids, MI
  • Green Bay, WI
  • Greenville, SC
  • Harrisburg, PA
  • Hartford, CT
  • Knoxville, TN
  • Lancaster, PA
  • Little Rock, AR
  • Louisville, KY
  • Milwaukee, WI
  • Minneapolis-St. Paul, MN
  • Nashua, NH
  • New Haven, CT
  • Portland, ME
  • Providence, RI
  • Reading, PA
  • Salinas-Seaside-Monterey, CA
  • Seattle, WA
  • Springfield, MA
  • Toledo, OH
  • Tucson, AZ
  • Tulsa, OK
  • Wilkes-Barre, PA
  • Salt Lake City, UT

We'll keep our fingers crossed that 4G LTE comes to these remaining cities sooner than later. It really makes a difference.

And yes... I get crummy reception in my home office as well.

Thanks, everyone, for the tips!

AT&T continues to throw the switch on 4G LTE

They turned on LTE about a year ago in Bryan/College Station Texas and it is so nice! Faster then my DSL

I'm still fairly certain that my AT&T Titan isn't capable of HSPA+ category 10 downlink speeds...never quite got over that.

I see someone doesnt know that At&t doesnt support iphone that much anymore, 'cuz its not exclusive like before. Now they've got WP8

As much as I love windows phone George, iPhone is still the majority. More people will use LTE, making our amazing LTE now much slower. GOD DAMMIT IPHONE!!

Yawn.  Verizon threw the switch a long time ago and is going to be way ahead in LTE for awhile.  They'll likely be the first to deply VOIP on LTE as well as the first to upgrade their LTE network for even faster speeds.

With LTE, yes as long as the phone has two antennas.  iPhone 5 won't support it, but you won't be able to do LTE on AT&T while talking with the iPhone 5 either because of the lack of antennas.
But with LTE you can do both.  And that will hold true for VOIP as well.

Wrong. You can do voice and data while on lte with at&t on the iPhone 5. They transmit the voice over umts. Has nothing to do with antennas. Until VoIP Verizon still relies on its 3g network for voice and cdma won't allow both

Wrong.  You can do voice and data, but not LTE on AT&T.  It will drop down to HSPA+ for data.
My bro has a Razr Maxx that does LTE data and voice simultaneously just fine because it uses the two antennas required for LTE and has a modem capable of doing CDMA and LTE simultaneously via the chipset plus a third antenna dedicated to CDMA.  The iPhone DOES NOT support SVLTE, meaning that neither AT&T or VZW can have you talking and using LTE simultaneously.  This does have to do with Apple deciding not to add a third antenna dedicated to CDMA.

So no, you can't do both.  And while CDMA won't allow both if you're using EVDO, LTE is a different beast.  Any LTE outside of the iPhone will do both on Verizon and, unlike AT&T, Verizon will have its whole network switched to LTE next year.  And VOIP over LTE is a software upgrade for VZW on most of their modern handsets.  Same for the LTE upgrade.

There it is: "So on AT&T, iPhone will fall back to HSPA+ while on a phone call.  On Verizon/Sprint, there will be no data while on a phone call (while every other CDMA/LTE smartphone does support LTE data while on a phone call)."

In fact, I'm not sure the WP8 devices on AT&T will be able to do LTE simultaneously unless they have the third antenna to support GSM.  If not, they'll scale down and Verizon will be the only ones able to do LTE data and CDMA voice.

But the Razrs do it, the Galaxy S3 does it, as do the other VZW Android LTE phones I've played with because VZW has asked for the third antenna in the phone for CDMA support.

If what your saying is that att doesn't allow for you to use voice and data over lte at the same time then I believe you are correct. However if you are saying that if I am making a phone call and using data at the same time that my data goes down to hspa then you would be wrong. On my 900 I have been able to keep lte while making a phone call. As for who gets lte the fastest, both att and vzw have communicated their networks will be done by next year.

No, what I was saying is that the iPhone 5 scales down to HSPA+ on calls for AT&T because it lacks a third antenna.  LTE uses two antennas in the phone.  A phone that is properly designed should be able to do both voice and LTE simultaneously.  All the VZW LTE phones do it other than iPhone 5.  All the AT&T phones will do it, other than iPhone 5 (though the iPhone will do data over HSPA+ when you talk).
AT&T's official plans filed through the FCC indicate that less than half of their network will be LTE by the end of 2012, focused on large population centers.  By the end of next year they'll have more covered, but AT&T will not have its full network converted until 2015.
Verizon has been rolling out LTE since the end of 2010.  They will have full network coverage, even in RURAL areas, by some time next year.
The big kicker will be when Verizon increases the data speeds on their network.  They are the only ones with the spectrum right now to kick LTE up to its 300 Mbps top end.  And they are likely the first to do VOIP with HD voice tech from Qualcomm.
VZW's network is generally always a step ahead of everyone else because they invest more than anyone else in it.  It's their philosophy.  While AT&T and others for a long time focused on having the cool phone, Verizon focused on having the best network.  When AT&T pulled in all those iPhone users, they found out the deficiencies of their network.  I have friends that I see who still get dropped down to EDGE all the time on their network here in Tampa while VZW has LTE coverage everywhere.

How often will a person be simultaneously talking and using the Internet? This really isn't a big deal.

Hey Daniel, don't know if you got my tweet way back when...but Philly, PA has LTE now also. I would say for about a month or two now.

The Lumia JUST starting picking up the LTE signal here in Detroit in the last 30min. Nice little surprise.

Yes they do, LTe rollout begins in Q4. It will be category 10 which is better than what AT&T,Verizon and sprint are using. It will also be easily upgradable to LTe advanced via software update. Do your research before posting garbage.

Have fun with the 3GB you're allowed to use on it before being raped. I get unlimited data on T-mobile and when they rollout LTe by next year it will be unlimited too.

I'm in Cincinnati, OH and my brother's SGS III occasionally picks up an LTE signal here on AT&T. It must be coming soon! Hopefully in time for my Lumia 920.

Note that they just turned up LTE in Southern CT (Fairfield County area). I get it everywhere here now. 14mb down, 9 up. Pretty snappy.

Yup, it's been on in New Haven for quite a while (used to live in West Haven and I had LTE from day one with my Lumia 900) and Bridgeport was just switched on a week or two ago.

Funny that we already have 3G HSAP+ 42Mbps and all current "4G networks" are actually 3.9G because they give out speeds of under 100Mbps. LTE-A will be the "real 4g"n as for the current ones it's not what certified ITU 4G is, but hey we are just ppl. LTE-A I'm waiting for u.

Cool. Right when I saw this, I tapped the top of the screen and saw LTE. AT&T said LTE wil be deployed in Metro Detroit his fall never thinking it would be this quick!

Surprisingly, Bakersfield has had LTE for quite some time now.  I don't know how long exactly, but longer than I've had my Focus Flash.  And I swear it's almost as fast as my 6Mb internet connection.

Lol tmobile's financial problems are going to slow any major expansion that they may have planned. So even if tmobile has a faster network, the other 2-3 carriers will be done with there current rollouts before tmobile is even 50% done with theirs.

I'm representin Greenville/Spartanburg SC, Can't wait to see LTE signal on my 900. I personally only know 1 other person with a windows phone. I really hope Samsung, HTC and Nokia can change that in the next few months/years.
Funny story though. There is a monthly evening that the wifes of our circle all have a "BUNCO". some card game or something, The average is about 15 or so ladies that meet up to play and eat and chat. 2 months ago, the wife said, all except one had an iPhone. The past couple of months I have been showing how awesome and different the windows OS is and she really digs it but she didn't want to change/be different.. Well, just this past saturday, they had bunco and one of the ladies had the pink 900.
Now the wife wants to all of a sudden get a pink 900 but is afraid of change.. She ended up asking for the iPhone 5 since it was up for renewal but she is starting to realize the same thing we keep saying. iPhone is no longer the "cool" phone..
Especially now that you can get it at 15 different carriers and at BP and Exxon and if you collect 7 UPC codes from cracker jack boxes..
If a product being everywhere was cool then Ashton Martins would on every car lot..
No matter what comments I get back, I will be honest, COOLNESS factor of the phone matters.
Thats why the iPhone was hot the first 3 years and now it has fallen off.
Sales <> coolness, cuase if that was the case, toilet paper would be cool

I live in Cleveland,TN and we have 4g LTE. I was shocked but I pulled a 16 meg download speed in this little southern town. :)

Its great to see Allentown, Harrisburg and Reading, PA was on this list. But Wilkes-Barre, PA. I couldn't believe it. I thought I didnt get enough coffee this morning. Great to hear thanks guys.

We hae LTE here in the Seattle Area. Redmond, Kirkland, Bellevue and Issaquah all getting LTE. In Issaquah I am only getting 9mbps on the bandwidth test :)

Holy god...They just flipped the switch over to LTE here in Columbus last night, and OMG what a difference.
I was not able to get any type of signal in my downtown office before, now I am back to listening to streaming music. :)
