Best Camera Apps for Windows 10

The native Windows 10 camera app does a commendable job of things, but some may prefer an alternative camera interface. Be it one with more features, an easier interface or a more specialized design, the Windows Store has a nice collection of options worth considering.

Many of these apps are for Windows 10 Mobile — you need a camera, after all — but should you use a tablet or your laptop to take photos some of them are also available for Windows 10 PC.

After searching the Windows Store shelves for the best camera apps for Windows 10, let's take a look at what the Store has to offer!

Camera360 Sight

Camera360 Sight has been available in the Windows Store for a while and replaced the popular Camera360 app. This camera app stands out from the pack with its gesture-based controls. Swipe up at the viewfinder and you reveal image ratio options (4:3, 16:9 and 1:1) and swipe down to review an assistive toolbar that has options for a viewfinder grid, invert the viewfinder, HDR capture and white balance settings.

Additional features for Camera360 include:

  • Three self-timer modes (three, five and voice activated)
  • Nine real-time effects filters
  • Flash controls (on, off and automatic)
  • Pinch to zoom
  • Front camera support

One of the nice features for capturing images with Camera360 is an exposure compensation control that pops up when you tap on the viewfinder. This adjustment can help you achieve better exposure for your images.

Along with being a capable camera app, Camera360 Sight has a respectable built-in photo editor. Editing tools include 12 adjustment tools (exposure, brightness, highlights, etc.), cropping tools and more than 60 effects filters. The editor may not give Adobe Photoshop a run for its money, but when you are on the go, it does a rather nice job of things.

Camera360 Sight is a free camera app for Windows 10 Mobile and delivers an attractive photography package for beginners and more advanced shooters alike.

HDR Photo Camera

HDR Photo Camera

If High Dynamic Range (HDR) is your cup of tea, HDR Photo Camera is a Windows 10 app worth trying. The app works by capturing three successive images of the same scene at different exposure levels. It then merges the three images, selecting relevant elements to create a single HDR image that brings out details in the darks and lights that would otherwise be lost.

HDR Photo Camera

If you don't feel the need for an HDR image, the app does support single image photography. Regardless of the capture method, HDR Photo Camera includs a simple photo editor where you can apply effect filters and adjust the brightness, contrast and saturation of the image.

HDR Photo Camera's interface is simple and straightforward with a series of control buttons lining the bottom of the viewfinder that includes capture mode options, flash controls, self-timer and ratio options. HDR Photo Camera supports 16:9 and 4:3 image ratios.

The settings for HDR Photo Camera provides you with the options to adjust the exposure bracketing used during HDR capture and tweak the processing ever so slightly to improve the final image. There is also a setting option to capture images faster (only for Lumia phones) to reduce the need for a tripod or similar bracing.

HDR Photo Camera has been around since the days of Windows Phone 8 and has advanced nicely. I still think you need a tripod to capture HDR images because the slightest movement duing the relatively slow capture process can offset the image stacking during HDR processing. However, HDR Photo Camera has progressed enough to give you a fighting chance at capturing HDR images free-hand.

HDR Photo Camera is an appealing Windows 10 camera app for the times you are in an HDR mood. The app is available for Windows 10 Mobile and is currently priced at $2.49 with a trial version to let you try things out before buying.
