Microsoft's Bing engine is predicting the winning horse of the Kentucky Derby, to be held on Saturday, May 7, based on "web and social data". This is just the latest sports and entertainment event that the Bing engine will try to predict.
In a blog post, Microsoft points out there are a ton of different things to consider when predicting the winner of a horse race. It's not just the horses themselves, but also the jockeys, trainers and the track conditions:
That said, the Bing Predicts team is using web and social data to algorithmically determine the winners of this year's major horse races. We're confident in our science and look forward to seeing how we fare at the races.
Here's what Bing thinks the top five results will be on Saturday, with a note that those positions could change between now and the start of the race:
Bing will also try to predict the winners of the other two races in the Triple Crown: The Preakness on May 21 and the Belmont Stakes on June 11.
