Windows Phone Apps

Microsoft today pushed out an update for Xbox Music on Windows Phone 8.1. The update is the first for 2015 and the first since the update last December.

Although no new features were introduced, the 2.6.656.0 update does address numerous user complaints and issues with the app. The changelog itself is quite substantial, and we will post it in its entirety.

National Public Radio today has released their new NPR One app for Windows Phone 8.1 and Windows 8.1. The app is universal, appearing to use the same code across both platforms. It is also very minimalist, modern, and well done.

NPR One is not your standard public radio app. Instead, it is a new effort by NPR to create a more "personalised" experience based on your preferences. You get a combination of live radio from your local radio station, in addition to suggesting programs. You can also search things you are interested in, and the service will begin to cater to your tastes.

Update: According to its store listing, it looks like Bank of America will be dropping its Windows 8.1 app in March as well (thanks, Brent, for the tip).

Original story: Yet another major US bank is ending its support for the Windows Phone platform. This time it's Bank of America, which has posted a note on its app's store page that it will stop supporting Microsoft's mobile OS sometime in early March.

HTC today finally got around to updating their HTC Camera app for their One M8 for Windows. Since its release, HTC has updated numerous core apps (Sense TV, Dot View app) for their flagship Windows Phone, although Camera has gone without one.

Today, 2.0 has come to the Store, which is a rather large jump. The banner feature here is the new Pan 360 option, which replaces the previous Panorama mode that is built into the camera app.

Back in December, we brought you the news that Sygic was poised to bring their GPS Navigation app to Windows Phone. For the last few weeks, it has been in an active private beta but today it is available to everyone, worldwide.

Sygic GPS Navigation was the first Nav app for the iPhone back in 2009 and today their app is powering 75 million users on Android and iOS. Now, Windows Phone users get access to Sygic's extensive mapping data (provided by TomTom), which excels in regions where others tend to fail, especially in Eastern Europe. Sygic also has an attractive speedometer app for Windows Phone that can be much fun.

I have been using Sygic GPS Navigation for a few weeks now, and it is something to try.

Update: Both social networks are now functional again. If you can't access them in your region just yet, hold tight. Services are being restored.

Facebook and Instagram, the popular social network and it's photo-centric sub-division, are currently experiencing a denial of service attack that's affecting access for some users. If you've been trying to check your feeds and you've been getting errors, don't worry — it's them, not you.

Update: We're not sure what's going on, but the app has been pulled from the store as quickly as it arrived. It's probably just a hiccup and will be back shortly.

While Chase bank may be abandoning the Windows Phone platform here in the states, Brazilian Windows Phone users were treated to a new app from one the country's largest banks, Caixa, today.
