If you installed the Windows 10 Technical Preview for phones, you may have noticed that the start screen renders tiles differently from what we've seen in Windows Phone 8.1. Tiles that use the theme color were transparent in Windows Phone 8.1, allowing you to see the background image, but in Windows 10 for phones, the tiles are merely translucent. If you're a fan of transparent tiles, you're in luck, as Microsoft's Joe Belfiore announced that the feature will be making its way to Windows 10 for phones.

One of the many smaller changes that are found in the Windows 10 Technical Preview for phones is in regards to the overhauled Notification and Action Center. On Windows Phone 8.1, users can swipe away notifications but only as a group based on the app. For instance, you can clear your Outlook email alerts, but it is all email or nothing.

However, in Windows 10, swiping to the right clears just the one notification instead of the whole group.

Here's a neat little feature that Microsoft has slipped into the new Windows 10 Technical Preview for phones. In Windows Phone 8.1, shutting down the phone gives you the simple, albeit pleasant "goodbye" message. But when you shut it down in Windows 10, you'll get a little reminder of your next calendar appointment.

Tune into our video tour of this app, including its features and functions. The app is demonstrated on both the Lumia 830 (AT&T) and Lumia 635 (T-Mobile).

One of the more useful tricks in Windows 10 for phones is the ability to expand notifications in the Action Center.

When you get a list of emails or alerts, only a snippet is previewed, often cutting off much-needed information. Indeed, on Windows Phone 8.1, you often cannot see the whole Toast notification in the Action Center, making it a bit cumbersome.

The Windows 10 Technical Preview for phone is now available, at least for some people. One of the most important things about using this early release is giving feedback back to Microsoft. After all, you are partly responsible for the future direction of this operating system.

Windows 10 for phones, like the desktop version, has a Feedback App built in. One way that you can quickly access the application anytime is to use this simple trick.

If you're joining the ranks of those on the Windows 10 Technical Preview for phones, one of the important factors to consider is whether your native language is supported. It's too easy to presume it will be, or that everyone can speak enough English to make it through.

It's here! Microsoft has today flipped the switch and released its promised Windows 10 Technical Preview for phones. Outside of what we saw at the Redmond event on January 21, this is our first real opportunity to take a look at the next major version of Windows for smartphones.

If you're already enrolled in the Windows Insider program, to download it you'll need the Windows Insider app on your phone and from there the rest is relatively easy.

A few points to consider before you go ahead and take the plunge

Now that we know when we're going to see the first Windows 10 Technical Preview for phones, there are definitely going to be a lot of people getting ready to try it out. The desktop previews have been well received, and there's nothing to suggest the phone previews won't be equally so.
