Chassis 2 for Windows Phone 7 to be 'BlackBerry' style

We've gotten the message: Chassis 1 specifications for Windows Phone 7 is "black slab" style--long 800x4800 devices with an optional slide out keyboard (with only the LG C900/GW910 using that option so far).

But little was known about Chassis 2, though speculation was always that it would be some type of front qwerty device because we knew 480x320 resolution support was coming.

In an interview with Silcon.com, Microsoft's ISV developer evangelist Paul Foster mention this specifically about the second design specifications:

WP7 devices will have one of two screen resolutions - either 800 x 480 for large touchscreen devices with the potential for slide-out Qwerty keyboards, or 480 x 320 for 'BlackBerry' style handsets that can incorporate a Qwerty on the front of the device. Microsoft expects the majority of WP7 devices to have the larger screen resolution at launch, with smaller resolution handsets coming later, said Foster.

Once again, this is not really that shocking and was to be expected (what else could you do with Chassis 2 or 3?), in fact if you go back to February 23rd at CNet, this was pretty much known back then:

Chassis 2-compliant phones will support real sliding keyboards plus touch, the podcasters claimed. They said these would be more Palm-Treo-like.

Sounds like the Dell Lightning, no? Which also explains why that won't be ready till 2011. Now we just have to figure out what Chassis 3 is...that's some real news.

Chassis 2 for Windows Phone 7 to be 'BlackBerry' style

Actually the Lighting had a slide out qwerty so it seems like that would still be chasis 1. I agree I'm really interested in Chasis 3... maybe a tablet form factor!

Yeah, but we're not sure on the resolution on that device: is it 800x480 or 480x320? I'm leaning towards the latter, but if the former you'd be right.

I don't know that the leak specified the resolution, but it was a 4.1 inch screen. It would be a shame to make that 480x320.

I'm thinking Chassis 3 will be a slate form factor with 9" or smaller display. Anything larger would be a Windows based slate/convertible with touch optimized ui.

Microsoft expects that most of the devices to solve WP7 big screen at the launch, combined with lower resolution to come later.

480x320? Disappointing. I would have liked to see 640x480 in a front qwerty.

lol, chasis 2 for WP7 is going to be in a "blackberry" form factor that even Blackberry is distancing itself from. Such good decisions; these things are going to sell like Gangbusters.

By the way, how many of these amazing live tiles are going to be able to fit on a 480 x 320 resolution, 3 inch screen? 4? lol.

Blackberry is hardly "distancing itself" from front qwertys, they're just expanding their lineup to compete with the iPhone. Fact is, front qwertys are still very popular and nothing wrong with offering options for form factors (would you rather Microsoft not offer different form factors?)

As far "good decisions", Microsoft is pushing high resolution "black slabs" first because they know they'll sell better...they say as much in the linked article. So yeah, it *was* a good decision to put off front-qwerty's till later.

This would most likely be Chassis 3.
Chassis 2 is for devices with the a slide out keyboard

Between this and the no CDMA until 2011 news, it looks like I'll be waiting a while to get a WP7 device. I have no problem passing on the initial black slabs.

Its like a combo of blackberry and win7 phone. This will be interesting. I will wait for more info on chassis 2.

i prefer full touch screen device without keyboard rather than the device with slide out keyboard.
