See your food. Urbanspoon gets bumped with new features in latest update

For you food mavens out there you may want to take a look at the recently updated Urbanspoon app (urbanspoon.com) for Windows Phone 8. Although it’s just a minor update (0.0.1 to be accurate), it does bring quite a few nifty features.

Urbanspoon was one of the Windows Phone 8 launch titles and we gave you a demo of it at the end of October. The app was solid for finding eateries but like a lot of 1.0 apps it was all meat but little in the way of optimizations. This tiny update goes a long way in improving performance, in our opinion, including the TellMe command e.g. “Urbanspoon..I want dinner”, which seems to be more reliable now.

The update also features Lockscreen Wallpaper, which is easily one of our top favorite features in Windows Phone 8. Much like Groupon’s iteration, Urbanspoon shows you a top rated restaurant in your area, including the name, location and approval rating. Sure, it’s a big gimmicky but it’s not a bad way to discover new places around you, we suppose. The rest of the changelog is as follows:

  • tap +send (NFC)
  • Login with Facebook ID
  • Numerous bugfixes and performance improvements

Like we said before, Urbanspoon is a solid service and the app needed some tweaking. They seemed to have delivered here with this update and we’re down with that, especially when we travel (yes, Local Scout is good too but Urbanspoon is still more robust).

Pick up Urbanspoon for Windows Phone 8 here in the Store.

i agree.  Two people tried it speaking with no accent and it both thought they said "Urban stay"  Man, TellMe sucks really bad sometimes.

I don't think its TellMe's fault. I can use Hey DJ! and Messaging without any issues and Urbanspoon (the previous version) was a disaster.

Haha, First time I tried it WP said it couldn't find an app with that name. The next two times it just bing searched "urban spoon I want dinner". Real useful!

Everyone has an accent.

Urbanspoon is a good example of what I hoped would happen with migration of apps from win8 to wp8 and it happened fast. Now I'd love to see the same with e.g. booking.com, which has a gorgeous win8 app but nothing for wp8.

But as an urbanspoon prime member with more than 150 reviews, I'm thrilled to have this app on my phone. The WP version actually has much more functionality than does the android one...for once.

Did everyone go and set everything up before they tried it? Because mines was doing the same thing until I set everything up.. Now it works very well..
