Since we’re days from kicking off the New Year, we figured we would roll out our new URL shortening service this week and start on a clean slate. You see, when we write our articles and a URL is generated, it could be super long resulting in gangly hyperlinks. When dealing with social networks like Twitter where characters are limited to just 140, a shortener is a must.
Up until now, we’ve been using bit.ly or dlvr.it for posting links and while they get the job done they’re not as cool as having your own “vanity” shortening service (evidently this is all the rage now for the Web). So begun our hunt for something different and it was decided upon mount Mobile Nations to forge one URL shortening service to rule them all…well, all of our sites including iMore, CrackBerry, Android Central and webOS Nation.
Thus PHON.ES was born (and yes, it’s pronounced “Phones”). We figured what better way to share our top mobile news with the world than with a PHON.ES address? So if you see a URL flying around the web with http://phon.es/, you can be assured it comes from one of our top rated Mobile Nations sites, including Windows Phone Central and others. Enjoy!
