Nokia announces the Lumia 520, the cheapest Lumia yet at $183

Nokia Lumia 520

While you may want high-end phone, that doesn’t mean there isn’t a market for entry-level phones. Nokia has just announced such a phone, their cheapest Lumia yet, the Lumia 520. The phone will be running Windows Phone 8 and put up a fight against cheaper Android devices.

While on the low-end, this phone is still packing some impressive internals for its price point. Inside you get a 1GHz Dua Core Snapdragon processor, 512 MB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage (expandable with microSD card up to 64GB), a 1430mAh battery. The display is a 4 inch IPS LCD running 800x480 pixels, you’ll also find the glass hardened, and with super sensitive touch capabilities (you can use your fingernails or gloves). When taking cimegraphs with your new Lumia 520 you’ll be using a 5 MP camera with autofocus, capable of recording 720p HD video at 30fps. All this in a package that is 119.9 x 64 x 9.9 mm that weights 124 grams.

The Lumia 510 will go for a crazy low price of $183 (139 euros), by far the cheapest Lumia that Nokia has made yet. A device like this can absolutely gobble up market share in emerging markets. Speaking of markets, the device will be available this quarter to Hong Kong and Singapore. Then during Q2 it will head to the UK and other European markets, T-Mobile here in the USA, Latin and South America, and then countries on the African continent.

Stick around, Dan and Jay will get some hands on of the Lumia 520 shortly at Mobile World Congress.

I like everything about this phone.
Except that there is not launch date for India where this product makes more sense.
They delayed the launch of 620 also.
Meanwhile samsung is selling tons of cheap plastic galaxies in India.

Screen size of the 520 is 4.0" to the 3.8" of the 620. But the 620 has a front facing camera, NFC, and LED flash. Everything else is about the same.

The battery is bigger on 520 though, I hope they made it interchangeable battery compatible to 620

Not just those slow Firefox phones but also $600 iphones that parents buy for their whiny kids who do nothing but FB, texting and some games. iphones are way over spec'ed and over priced for their use. Not to mention half of them either lose or break their iphones and parents have to replace/fix them in midst of contract.

Yea I don't get those some spoiled rich parents who would buy anything to their also spoiled kids just because they got cash to burn. Actually bad parenting.

Damn i cant believe how cheap this phone is. This should really help nokia sell windows phones in emerging markets. Also, at that price I would have expected a 4mp camera. /s :-P

This is very impressive! Nokia sure is on a mission. I just wish they get their production problems in check. They have a great thing going with the 920 and now more cheaper phones.

good news for consumers thanks nokia. hopefully they will still make most cheaper phones around 130USD to compete shiit/LAG/malware- DROIDS...

I would really think this would be super sexy with less bezel. That's why I don't like the 810...... :/

Rlly? I find the bezel adds for some nice contrast, but to each their own, still a notably cheap phone for people who need it. Those who r tight on budge won't mind the bezel :P haha

Lol the market for this very affordable phone would hardly complain about the size of the bezel.

Correct me if I´m wrong, but the Lumia 620 is the unique Lumia WP8 hanset without a super sensitive screen??

Sam, please add Latin American also on the text. :)

Seriously, $185 for a phone that is lag free with duo core... makes anyone who buys a $200 android like Galaxy mini or HTC Desire C an idiot. But here in Malaysia the justification given for choosing laggy low end android: "But, cannot jailbreak! Cant get free games!".
Talk about the majority of smartphone users here being unethical and choose not to buy but use cracked apps. Deals cant be better than this. I might just pick up as a 520 as a spare phone.

yeap, malaysian are generally very comfort in pirating apps. they think that once they have a phone and the internet, everything is free.

phone wise, the only drawback is the lack of flash. not because i'm going to use it to take picture but i need it as a flashlight

In my opinion, they could have done a better job of differentiating all the new Lumia phones. Color choices could have been different. For now, from all these devices: 520, 620, 720, 820, the only one that immediately stands out is 620 (you can tell its a 620 just by taking a look at it). But other than that, the devices are really good. I don't doubt the build qulaity of Nokia, and considering the prices and tech spechs, they will clearly be success.

Wait so are those headphones similar to iphone controlled ones? Are they specially for lumia or can earphones/headphones with remotes be used on the 520 with functionality similar to iOS devices?

How is it possible that this has a better battery than the 620?
Would buy the 620 in a heartbeat if it had the battery of any other existing Lumia..

Ok, but they're still holding people back, it's still not in the stores everywhere. They need to come up with a new design, give the Lumia a unique spin and tweak it a little because they're too similar looking (Windows army - 800, 900, 920, 820, 720, 620, 520, 8X & 8S).

Smartphone design is becoming near perfect in the last couple of years. Nokia, however, has been right at the top with Sony Xperia since the beginning imo.
