Microsoft has struck a deal with Telefónica to start a joint marketing effort to boost the sales of Windows Phone 8 hardware. Initially for a period lasting a year, the company will enhance marketing activities in support of stocked Windows Phones in the UK and Germany through O2, as well as Spain, Mexico, Brazil and Chile. Telefónica wishes to help develop a strong third choice for consumers to break the duopoly of Android and iOS.
José María Álvarez Pallete, COO of Telefónica S.A. had the following to comment on the announcement:
"An associate partner such as Microsoft is chosen as a result of its operator-focused business approach. The Microsoft business culture is based on a model of value creation through its associates, which fits in perfectly with our culture and also with our way of doing business."
Telefónica will work with hardware partners and Microsoft to ensure there's market demand for devices and enough high-end handsets are available that run Windows Phone 8. It'll be interesting to see how this partnership develops and how effective the campaign will be regarding sales and improved brand awareness.
