Huawei Ascend W2

While most of the Windows Phone world is focused on Nokia’s big move, we can’t forget (or dismiss) some of the other OEMs who are bringing new devices to market. Such is the case with Huawei and the Ascend W2, a device which was initially rumored to be a worthy flagship contender but has since dropped to mid-range status.

While the specs of the device make this on par with the Lumia 720, Huawei does bring something new to the table: colored LED capacitive buttons, dependent on your Accent color of choice.

We’re not going to lie, that’s a pretty unique and innovative feature that we would have predicted Nokia to have come up with. In short, when a user changes the Accent color in Windows Phone 8 to one of the 20 pre-set color patterns, the Back, Windows and Search key will also reflect that color choice.

Sure, it only has aesthetic value but much like the color range that Windows Phones come in these days, it really boosts what makes Windows Phone stick out. Speaking of hardware specs, we’ll reiterate those for you:

  • WVGA-display with a diagonal of 4.3 inches;
  • dual-core processor with a frequency of 1.4 GHz;
  • 512MB of RAM;
  • 8GB of built-in memory;
  • dimensions of 134 x 66.7 x 9.9 mm.

The Huawei Ascend W2 is expected to launch in the coming weeks, with the device showing up at Huawei’s Russia office. That means Russia and other presumably non-US countries should expect these colorful little bugger to go on sale soon.

Update: Engadget managed to capture a demonstration of those buttons on video, which you can watch below. Head to around the 50 second mark to see it.

I Nokia to concentrate on trying to bring the best user experience on a windows phone by trying to fill the gap where wp8 falls short, making ridiculous cameras with crazy MP counts and trying to get all the best apps possible over to the platform, lmao! Seriously though...I like the colour changing LEDs. How cool would it be if the entire phone changed colour to match the theme...and colour schemes were unlimited!!!

crappy specs... but matching colored accent buttons.. yeah i'll give them that.. Nokia shoulda nailed this one easy

There should be black and white accent options and more than "dark" and "light" (black and white) background options. Hopefully MS add more options.

While I like the ability to match color, I would generally rather have the back-light on the buttons turn off entirely in a way other than putting the phone in power saver mode. Is it too much to ask that the buttons only turn on faintly when in a dark room?

Also, particularly on my 920 I wish the button backlight was a true white color. Most of the time I don't notice it, but that backlight really is a horrible shade of yellow when it would look much better as a very dim white.

I've had 3 920s, 2 of them had white lights whilst one had that ugly yellow shade that you described. I guess you were unlucky.

Nice idea, and as for those talking about the specs, well, it's a budget device so the price should match.

now somebody should develop a random accent color program, so when you launch that program, it will randomize the 20 colours on the buttons. Great when you are in the club, like a disco ball :)

Have they bought Nokia yet? Lol... The CEO of whoarewe making that statement has made me dislike this Chinese cheapo....meh

Love the color button concept hate the phone design. Be bad ass to have color notification on the button like the Nexus One had.

Me neither.  Agreed, tacky.
Could be the quality of the photos, but to me the colors don't match the color of the theme very well.  Darker blue theme with a brighter blue LED color?  Meh...

Same here...not really digging it...somehow it doesn't look as classy as one would hope it to be...atleast that's the case with this phone...

You are right, that's a really cool feature!!!
I wish they already produce that phone that changes color all over, not only the buttons or the sides but, the whole thing, back and front.  Now, that's super cool!!!
Kudos to Huawei for this innovative phone!!!
  It doesn't matter if it's a mid-range phone, it's still a good option.  This is a business people, if Huawei  went for a mid-range smartphone it's because they analized the market and this was their best option for selling a lot of units.

The phone is kind of cheap-looking, isn't it? I do like the idea of color-matched buttons, but I'd have to see it in person first. The effect doesn't seem to look all that great in these photos with the colors nowhere near matching. I'd rather have the generic white than have something that looks like a cheap aftermarket mod.

Good on Huawei, the phone itself is decent but the little things like those LED buttons is pure awesome.

Those colour led lights look horrible and cheap lol... it looks more clean and sexy and classy as white lights.

Now since windows phone starting to pick up a bit now other OEM want to make one. Bye. Give credit where credit is actually due. Nokia.

If the Huawei is midrange then I guess my 822 is on the high end all of the sudden.
Anyway, I wouldn't piss on their phone if the battery caught fire, but the color changing button are cool.

The L8xx WP8 series are high end phones, trust me. Same hardware specs as the L9xx except for storage (but we have microsd support), camera and screen.

Looks ugly, would've been better if the back and search button remained white, and the start button is the one that changes color like in Windows 8 charms bar.
