Live - Xbox at Game Developers Conference 2015

Windows Central is here in sunny San Francisco where Microsoft is set to take the stage at 2pm ET (11 am PT / 7 pm GST) for GDC 2015!

Head of Xbox Phil Spencer will host the presentation about developing games across the Microsoft ecosystem – from Windows 10 PCs to Xbox One consoles. In other words, this should be some exciting stuff!

The session will not be streamed, although Microsoft will later post it online on Xbox Live, YouTube, Channel 9, and on Xbox Wire. For now, tune into our live blog below to get the news as it happens!

ScreamRide review: Build, ride, and break roller coasters in this Xbox exclusive game

16

If there's one game developer that knows roller coasters and theme parks, it's UK-based Frontier Developments. From 2003-2005 they made a name for themselves with three Roller Coaster Tycoon games and several expansions before switching publishers to develop a pair of Thrillville games. Eventually Frontier produced Kinect Disneyland Adventures and 2013's Zoo Tycoon for Microsoft, perhaps to less player acclaim.

Now Microsoft and Frontier team up once more for the Xbox One and 360 exclusive ScreamRide. Billed as a spiritual successor to Roller Coaster Tycoon, ScreamRide is a roller coaster building and riding game with a focus on destruction. With three campaign modes and a full sandbox mode with coaster sharing, ScreamRide is surprisingly robust for a game about coasters. But those gameplay pieces don't always fit together as well as they should, threatening to derail the fun.

HTC Vive hands-on

I am under water. Still standing, but under water. Deep in the ocean, actually. Schools of tiny fish are swimming by. Rays float overhead, just under the surface. A whale saunters over. Is it deep enough for a whale but not too deep for the light to penetrate down to the deck of the sunken ship on which I was standing? I don't know. And I don't care.

I slowly, carefully wander over to the edge of the deck of the ship. Close, but not too close. The sea floor is a long way down, and the railing not all that high. I don't want fall off.

Wait. Where am I again?

It was, to say the very least, an odd experience.

It's almost not fair to write about Vive, the virtual reality system that HTC and software company Valve announced here at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. "You have to experience it" was the line the folks who make the thing kept telling us leading up to the announcement.

And they were right. But I'll do my best.

Kantar's latest data reveals sales spike in France, Australia, but shortfalls in stronghold Italy

197

Kantar WorldPanel has released its latest numbers for smartphone sales for the last three months ending back in January. The numbers contrast nicely with the last report that showed near universal declines in sales of Windows Phone.

The numbers, as usual, are a mixed bag of good news and not so good news for Windows Phones. Sales, in general, are up slightly as a whole across of big five European markets including Great Britain, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain. However, in individual countries, the story varies.

You can pin individual settings to the Start screen in Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2

208

The Lumia 640 and Lumia 640 XL have been announced this week at MWC 2015, and they come with a newer version of Windows Phone 8.1. Other Windows Phone users are probably going to see the new features in an update called Windows Phone 8.1 GDR2. The changes are subtle, but make life a little easier. We've noticed the settings page received some changes, including the ability to pin individual settings to the Start screen. Watch our hands-on video to see it in action.
