Phone Insider app for Windows 10 Preview updated, renamed to Windows Insider

500

Windows 10 for phones is on the way, at least in preview form. Tonight, Microsoft began laying more groundwork for the Technical Preview by updating their Phone Insider app. Originally found on the Store a few weeks ago, the Insider program will let people download early builds of Windows 10 to their phones before general release.

Poll: Which OEM would you most like to see make a Windows Phone?

590

After the news came out earlier regarding Huawei's continued refusal to make new Windows Phones, the Windows Central community began discussing other smartphone makers who they'd prefer to see make one. While the Windows Phone portfolio has seen new additions in recent times such as BLU and Yezz, along with repeat performances – in some areas – from Samsung and HTC, it's Microsoft's own Lumia brand which dominates the landscape.

But there are a lot more companies out there making a lot more phones. So, if you could choose any one of them at all, which OEM would you most like to see make a Windows Phone?

Microsoft rumored to be investing in Google Android rival Cyanogen

290

Update: Bloomberg Business is now corroborating the earlier WSJ story, adding that the two companies are in talks to create "a version of the Android mobile-operating system that's more friendly to Microsoft services".

Original Story: According to the WSJ, Microsoft may be one of a handful of companies investing in Cyanogen. Cyanogen started off as a customized version of the Android operating system named CyanogenMod back in 2009 but has grown to a business of 80 people named Cyanogen, Inc. starting in 2013. The company co-launched their version of the Android OS on the OnePlus One smartphone in 2014.

Now, Cyanogen is looking for money, and Microsoft is reportedly putting cash into the company as a minority investor.

Xbox SmartGlass beta updated with TV streaming for Australia, shifts to Studios division

14

Microsoft has pushed out an update today for their SmartGlass beta app on Windows Phone. The update coincides with the recent rollout of OneGuide and Digital TV Tuner for Australia.

Additionally, the name of the publisher has shifted from Microsoft Corporation to Microsoft Studios. The transition of the publisher likely has to do with SmartGlass being folded into the new Xbox app for Windows 10. During our time last week at Microsoft's event, we were told that SmartGlass indeed was going away as the Xbox universal app for Windows 10 makes SmartGlass functions redundant.
