Today, Microsoft unleashed a salvo of news regarding Windows 10. Whether it was news for the desktop OS, gaming or something about holograms, there was something for everyone. After the main event, the press spent a good five hours in private tours of Microsoft's new announcements. Although video was not allowed, there was plenty of nitty-gritty that they revealed. First up, Skype.

Microsoft demoed how the Messaging app on Windows 10 for ­phone lets users switch between Skype messaging or SMS. This change is a total throwback to the early Windows Phone days with the Messaging Hub, and it's a welcome return. However, what about the Skype app—do you still need it for Windows 10 on the phone?

No, you don't. You can still install if you want to, but Skype is native to the Windows 10 OS.

The dust has settled but the excitement hasn't died down – and probably won't for a long time to come. Microsoft has delivered its "Windows 10: The next chapter" event out at its campus in Redmond and it didn't disappoint. Going into it we had only ideas at what we might see, but there were a whole lot of things that we weren't ready for.

There was a lot to take in during the presentation, but already there are some parts of it that stand above the others. We learned a lot about Windows 10 the platform, the future, and even saw some hot new hardware.

The Windows Insider program has been pushing out Windows 10 Technical Previews since the latest version of Microsoft's OS was first announced. After today's event up in Redmond, there's no doubts a lot more people who are excited to try out those shiny new builds – including for phones – for themselves. It looks like lots of Lumia apps for Windows Phone, including Panorama, Selfie, and Video Trimmer, have gotten the update treatment today. While there are no current changelogs listed for the updates, other than support for more devices in video trimmer and video upload, you may want to go ahead and grab them in hopes of squashing some bugs.

While Windows 10 in its phone form only got a partial look – expect to see more at MWC at the beginning of March – ahead of the highly anticipated preview builds pushing out, we did at least get a little snippet of information many Windows Phone users have been wanting to hear. Microsoft is committed to building a Windows 10 flagship smartphone later this year.

WhatsApp now has a Chrome web client

About a month back, there were rumors that the Facebook-owned and very popular messenger service WhatsApp would soon be available on your computer via the web. Today, the folks at Whatsapp have pulled it off.

The new web client is an extension of the data from your phone, displayed in a Google Chrome page. It's simple to set up, and as long as your phone has a data connection you'll be able to send and receive messages via the WhatsApp service right from your PC.
