GDC 2013 Interview: Qualcomm spills its guts about Windows Phones' guts

44

Our recent trip to the Game Developers Conference focused mostly on games, as you might expect. But the hardware behind the software is fairly important too. For Windows Phone, Nokia is certainly the device manufacturer doing the most to grow the platform. But regardless of the handset maker, one hardware manufacturer provides the chipsets for all Windows Phone devices: Qualcomm.

We sat down and interviewed Michelle Leyden-Li, the Senior Director of Marketing at Qualcomm about the hardware that drives Windows Phone and Windows RT devices. Check out the video after the break!

Samsung ATIV S Review: the Windows Phone that could have been so much more

370

Windows Phone Central's review of Samung's flagship Windows Phone 8 device

Samsung is in a rather odd position. Its strength is certainly Android, but the company enjoys skinny dipping into the Windows Phone ecosystem every once in a while. The ATIV S is Samsung’s answer to Windows Phone 8, offering a familiar style to the Galaxy S3 line of Android smartphones (which can be viewed as both a positive and drawback) and packing a serious punch.

The ATIV S is supposed to be taken seriously, and when you first get some hands-on time with the Windows Phone, it’s easy to see why. It’s incredibly hard to put the smartphone down after booting the thing up for the first time. But I can't help but feel as though the ATIV S could have (and should have) been so much more.

Gallery: HTC's booth at Mobile World Congress 2013

60

Here at Windows Phone Central we often get accused of focusing on one manufacturer in the Windows Phone world, and not giving the others equal time. The truth of the matter is that we go where the news is, and this week especially has been a week all about Nokia and their heavy presence at MWC.

Still, we want to bring as much of the MWC experience to you as we can so when we find something relevant you'll know about it. Whilst we wish there was a story to be told in this post, the truth is that HTC displayed their Windows Phone 8 offerings by way of exactly 4 devices (among easily 40 seperate HTC One devices). So, here's the shots we took of that display, plus some dudes jumping...

Nokia Lumia 620 Review - Affordability never looked so good

122

Nokia’s Lumia 620 could be Palm Centro of 2013

The Nokia Lumia 620, a modestly priced entry-level Windows Phones, represents one of the best value devices we’ve encountered yet on the platform. The 620 replaces the Lumia 610, a device that went on sale last year and now runs Windows Phone 7.8. But in our opinion, the value impact of the 620 is leaps and bounds higher than its predecessor.

Make no mistake, this is an entry-level device that is not meant to rival the 800/900 series of Lumia Windows Phones. But also know this: it is one cool device and we’re having a hard time putting it down.

Samsung ATIV Odyssey Windows Phone Review

39

How does Verizon and Samsung's latest Windows Phone entry hold up? Read the Windows Phone Central review of the ATIV Odyssey.

While Samsung was first out of the gate announcing their Windows Phone 8 device, the ATIV S, the company seems to be struggling down the stretch.  With delays in the ATIV S's release and a rather limited market, the Samsung ATIV Odyssey might change the tide with Samsung's Windows Phone lineup.  At least in the U.S. market.

The ATIV Odyssey joined the HTC 8X and Nokia Lumia 822 at Verizon Wireless giving the company a little more diversity in their Windows Phone lineup. The ATIV Odyssey may not have the pop of the Nokia or HTC devices but it's still a decent Windows Phone.  But at a release price of $49.99 (free at Best Buy), it may struggle with the competition and in keeping Samsung's foot in the Windows Phone market.

First impression with the Verizon Samsung ATIV Odyssey Windows Phone

35

We just got our hands on the new Verizon Samsung ATIV Odyssey and it makes a nice first impression. The Windows Phone has a familiar feel to it that reminds us of the Samsung Focus 2 or maybe a thicker version of the original Samsung Focus.  The ATIV Odyssey joins the HTC 8X and Nokia Lumia 822 on Verizon's Windows Phone lineup.

The 4" Super AMOLED Screen looks nice and the Odyssey feels comfortable in the hand. The Windows Phone is powered by a 2100Mah battery and driven by a 1.5Ghz Dual Core CPU. Add NFC support and a 5MP rear camera and the ATIV Odyssey comes across as a decent mid-level Windows Phone.  The only downside that jumps off the paper is the Odyssey only has 8GB of storage. However it does have a microSD expansion slot and while 8GB may not sound too great, memory shouldn't be an issue.

Windows Phone 8S by HTC Review

Windows Phone Central's review of HTC's mid-range Windows Phone 8 device

The Windows Phone 8S by HTC has been a quiet little device, which has recently launched in a number of markets to compliment the more advanced HTC 8X. As a mid-level Windows Phone, the 8S sports hardware that’s powerful enough to process majority of tasks quickly, but it's main attraction is the affordable price tag.

While the HTC 8X is a strong choice for those who require more power and a larger display, the 8S fits in with those who are new to Windows Phone or smartphones in general, not to mention consumers who either don’t require much horsepower, or have enough funds for high-end devices. The issue is there's a lot of competition out there, and Nokia is just starting to get back into the game with Windows Phone 8.

The HTC 8S is available on both contracted plans and Pay As You Go (PAYG), but does not break the bank balance. We’d like to throw out a thanks to Clove for sending us the unit for this review to be completed. The HTC 8S is currently available on their website. We’ve been using the device for little more than a week, but what do we make of the hardware? If you’d like the short version: we’re impressed, but there are annoyances.

How do flagship Windows Phone 8 cameras compare to a prosumer DSLR? We find out.

Windows Phone Camera Faceoff: HTC 8X, Nokia Lumia 920 and Olympus OM-D

The other day we shared a night photo comparison between the Nokia Lumia 920 Windows Phone and a Canon 1D-X DSLR. While the Canon 1D-X and Lumia 920 cameras are worlds apart, the Lumia 920 didn't do a bad job of capturing night photos. All of which made us wonder how the recent crop of Windows Phones would measure up against your run of the mill stand alone digital camera.

We recently took the HTC 8X, Nokia Lumia 920 and Olympus OM-D EM-5 camera out for a comparative test drive and the Windows Phone cameras didn't do to shabby of a job. The Olympus is a mirrorless camera that is similar is design to a "point and shoot" digital camera. It has a 4/3rds sensor shares the same 4:3 aspect ratio as the two Windows Phones and the camera has in-body stabilization which is loosely similar to the Lumia 920's.

Samsung ATIV S missing everywhere: Turns up in Austria? [Confirmed]

26

We wrote last week about the Samsung ATIV S and the ‘case of late availability’ but perhaps we spoke too soon. The Austrian T Mobile site is now showing the device as being in stock. Hurrah! ?

Many are waiting for the 4.8” monster phone from Samsung and while this looks like it could be good news, we’re unsure this is a sign of a rapid deployment or simply limited availability.

Samsung ATIV S "in testing" at O2 in Ireland; coming soon?

29

A forum page over on O2 Ireland's site indicates that they are currently testing the Samsung ATIV S on their network. The post says that testing began on December 4 for both the ATIV S and the HTC 8S. It isn't clear just how long the testing process will take, but it may be an indicator that both phones are very close to being released.

The Samsung ATIV S was the first Windows Phone 8 device announced and the last to show at the party. For reasons still unexplained, it has been delayed, with rumored release dates ranging from the end of December to sometime in February 2013. Windows Phone Central received a communication from Samsung saying that the ATIV S was still on track for the "end of the year."

Nokia Lumia 820 Windows Phone Review

Nokia Lumia 820 Windows Phone Review

Windows Phone Central's review of Nokia's mid-range Windows Phone 8 device (Non-branded)

While nearly all the attention on Windows Phone 8 devices has been lavished on the ‘hero’ devices such as the ATIV S, Lumia 920 and the HTC 8X the Lumia 820 has taken somewhat of a backseat.  The 820 does lack some higher end specs of its other Window Phone 8 brethren but it still manages to present a capable and compelling package.

The Lumia 820 is an important product both for Windows Phone 8 and Nokia, as it represents a mass market device the platform and manufacturer need. Unlike enthusiast phones such as the Lumia 920 it will be affordable on either a monthly contract or fit in nicely on a pay as you go plan. The Lumia 800 has become a bit of a hit on lower cost contracts and this paves the way for the 820 to continue where it left off. We have been using the 820 for over two weeks now and would like to share with you why we think this is a device worthy of your consideration.

HTC 8X vs Nokia Lumia 920 - Recording a live Deadmau5 event

94

Earlier this week we were lucky enough to be in attendance at the Electric in Brixton where Nokia promoted the Lumia 920 by showing a recorded version of Deadmau5's performance near tower bridge before bringing the man live into the club for a special free live event.

Of course we weren't content with going just for the beer and electro-house music, so we thought we'd use the opportunity to do another comparison for people still torn between the Lumia 920 and HTC 8X.

Windows Phone Camera Faceoff: Nokia Lumia 920 vs. HTC 8X

102

The latest crop of Windows Phones, the Nokia Lumia 920 and HTC 8X, bring together some of the latest technology with their cameras. Windows Phone cameras have progressed nicely through the years. We've seen new sensor technology to improve low-light performance, better software enhancements, and new stabilization mechanics come into play.

While the Nokia Lumia 920's Pureview camera has garnered a good bit of the Windows Phone 8 spotlight, the HTC 8X's camera has been lurking in the shadows. The 8X has a capable camera within its own right but how does it compare to the Lumia 920's heavy weight camera?
