Microsoft has announced today that it plans to open up a flagship store in Sydney, Australia — marking the company's first flagship store outside of North America.

Microsoft says that the store, which will be located at Westfield Sydney on Pitt Street Mall, will feature a similar layout and provide the same services as its current crop of flagship stores.

Xbox Avatars app launches for Windows 10 Technical Preview

Microsoft is continuing to deploy revamped universal Windows app for its upcoming Windows 10 OS. Today, the Avatars app is now available to let you customize and manipulate your Xbox gamer avatar.

The app itself is around 35 MB is ready to be used in Windows 10 Technical Preview for PCs and laptops. There is no word about the Windows Phone version, but since it presumably shares the majority of source code, we suspect it will not be long until it is on those devices too.

Virtual reality is one of those buzz phrases that has been around for ages, but rarely moves beyond niche technology. One creative way to bring it to the masses is by reducing user cost, and that can be achieved through Google Cardboard.

The Google Cardboard initiative lets companies create cardboard VR helmets with lenses that can be sold for $5 and up. Users then insert their phone into the device, and like a View-Master from childhood, you now have a cheap VR helmet.

Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2 aka GDR2 is slowly making it out the gate to various phones. The update comes preinstalled on the new Lumia 640 and Lumia 640 XL. However, the OS update managed to sneak on a few phones due to a bug in the Windows 10 Technical Preview update a week back, including the Lumia 930.

Over the weekend, we dived deeper into some of the new features of Update 2, but we missed one: Matroska MKV video support.
