Gears 5 is a third-person shooter from The Coalition. Not only does the game feature a larger campaign, but it also provides plenty of multiplayer modes. Some of the more underrated features of the game have to be its accessibility support and 60 Hz servers for smooth competitive matches.
According to an interview between The Coalition's Rod Fergusson and The Hollywood Reporter, the team wants to make the franchise "flourish" after it was "put it on the shelf to essentially die" by Epic Games, the original creators. We began this journey with Gears of War 4 and now I feel that we've hit our stride of Gears 5. Part of my mission since 2014 has been, how do I grow the franchise and bring it back? Epic put it on the shelf to essentially die, so Microsoft brought it back. Not only are we trying to bring it back, we want to grow and flourish... The buzzword everyone hates is 'transmedia.' To me, there's a credibility to being outside just the game. There's something about having an opportunity for loyal fans to get deeper into the world and see this thing is everywhere, not just one place... Ninja has a partnership with Microsoft and that made sense to them. It wasn't something that I was banging down the doors on... A game like Apex Legends basically got all of its marketing from streamers. You have to pay attention to that and the impact it has.
It's great to see that The Coalition wants to expand the property. However, it must do so in a cautious way because only by releasing quality experiences will Gears prosper. Another tidbit that came out of the interview was the fact that Microsoft didn't pay Ninja to stream Gears 5. However, that's a story for another day.
In Windows Central's review, Jez Corden wrote, "as a benchmark for visual excellence balanced against stellar performance, Gears 5 is technical wizardry. It also bridges platforms and storefronts... complete with... cross-play. The fact that Gears 5 manages to jam a... 12 to 18-hour campaign, several multiplayer modes, a map editor, and the promise of post-launch support represents one of the best deals in gaming right now. It's an even better value when you factor in Xbox Game Pass."
The game is garnering stellar reviews and you should check it out if you can. Gears 5: Ultimate Edition is already out for everyone, but Gears 5: Standard Edition launches on September 10 and is part of the regular Xbox Game Pass subscription.
