In Short

Gears of War 4 is the fourth installment in the main Gears of War series, and the first to debut on the Xbox One. The game was also the first to be developed solely by The Coalition – a new studio that formed shortly after Epic Games sold the franchise to Microsoft back in 2014.

Although built by a different team, Gears of War 4 inherits a large amount of its gameplay and concepts from its predecessors. The game reworks a number of existing modes, dividing the package into a single-player campaign, competitive multiplayer and cooperative Horde mode. Iconic concepts in gameplay also make a return, including Active Reloading and a unique, robust cover system.

The game introduces a new team of characters, consisting of J.D. Fenix, Delmont Walker, and Kait Diaz. These characters play a major role in Gears of War 4’s narrative, and uncovering the secrets behind the new enemy type: the Swarm.

Gears of War 4 is available on both Xbox One and Windows 10, as a part of the Xbox Play Anywhere initiative. Being a part of the program allows for a single digital license to transfer between both platforms, for no additional cost.
