Late last year we heard of a Gears of War movie – a project which looked to take the acclaimed video game series to the big screen. Spawned from a partnership between Microsoft Studios and Universal Pictures, the movie would be a live-action adaptation of the shooter franchise.
We've now learned that Shane Salerno, a screenwriter working the recently-announced "Avatar" sequels, will be lending a hand in the Gears of War movie. Although we're yet to know much about the project, it's confirmed to be detached from the narrative established in the main line of games. Hopefully, this should give the movie a fair amount of creative freedom, to take full advantage of the Gears of War universe.
When first announced last year, Rod Fergusson, studio head for Gears of War 4's developer The Coalition, clarified that the project was still in its early stages. Without a director or screenwriter at the time, we'll still be waiting a while until the movie hits theaters.
Nevertheless, having helped out with established films and series such as "Armageddon," "Savages" and "Hawaii Five-0," it will be interesting to see the direction Salerno takes the series. The writer has also delved into video games previously, having shaped the narrative for "Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Wildlands."
It's still to be seen whether the Gears of War movie will be able to distance itself from the stigma of video game-to-movie adaptations, but should be intriguing to see how it pans out. Stay tuned to Windows Central for future updates on the project.
