Marketplace Spotlight: Who's near me

Who's Near Me by SynergeTech Solutions is now being offered through the Windows Marketplace for Mobile. The app is a location based social networking application.

Who's Near Me finds people located nearby for, as described by SynergeTech, "friendship, romance, networking or just chatting". The app allows you to anonymously browse the list of profiles, view their photos, and message other users anonymously. Who's Near Me does have the option to create profiles if you are so inclined.

Once you identify someone you'd like to contact, you can initiate an anonymous text conversation. Looking for a more specific group or person? The app also contains filters to narrow down the type of person you're looking for. You can filter by gender, age, distance from your location, those with photos and those with profiles. The one thing that stands out with the filters is the age range. The min/max age range is 13 to 135 years old. I'm not too keen on an anonymous stranger messaging my 13 year old daughter and can't say that I know of too many 135 year-olds with Windows Phones.

I won't pretend that all of this sounds a little creepy. Who's Near Me is a stand alone network and doesn't integrate with other social networks (Facebook, Twitter, etc.). Still, it is a good reminder to review your privacy settings and proceed with caution when interacting on social networks.

It's an interesting application that might come in handy if you are new to an area and need suggestions for dining, shopping, apartment hunting, night life, etc. The level of anonymity is a concern though. Because of that, if you are looking for a mobile application to connect with social networks, I'm more inclined to recommend Facebook or Twitter. You have more versatility, features and safeguards in place.
