A few weeks after the launch of the flagship devices, the Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL, Microsoft surprised most by launching the budget Lumia 550 in a press event in Hyderabad.

Announced on October 6, 2015, the Lumia 550 is a 4G budget smartphone and is a carryover from the original Nokia portfolio of devices that Microsoft acquired when purchasing Nokia's mobile division. The Lumia 550 is considered a displacement device meant to take over the range of 5xx and 6xx series of Lumias that marks a shift toward a leaner portfolio of Lumia devices from Microsoft.
