Microsoft has decided to shut down the Nokia Chat beta app that it acquired when it bought Nokia's Devices and Services business. The Windows Phone app will shut down on January 15.
In its announcement, Microsoft said, "After this date, you will not be able to sign in, message your contacts, or access past conversations using Nokia Chat Beta for Windows Phone." It added that Windows Phone users of the app should begin to use Skype instead.
Nokia launched the first public beta version of Nokia Chat for Windows Phone in April 2013 after previously offering a version of the app for its feature phone devices. In addition to connecting with other Nokia Chat users, the Windows Phone app also integrated with Yahoo Messenger contacts. However, it's not exactly a shock that Microsoft decided to end Nokia Chat in favor of its own Skype.
