What you need to know

  • Mojang is celebrating Minecraft's 11th birthday today.
  • To celebrate the momentous occasion, Mojang is rebranding itself to Mojang Studios.
  • It signifies how Mojang has expanded to multiple games, and multiple studios around the world.
  • The rebrand also comes with a new logo, and a new face for the growing company.

Minecraft has been around for a baffling eleven years now, and Mojang, the studio behind the world's most popular game, is using today to unveil their new image. Mojang will henceforth be known as Mojang Studios, unifying the numerous studios they have all around the world working on games like Minecraft, Minecraft Dungeons, and Minecraft Earth under one name.

Not only is Mojang Studios donning the modern name, they've also designed a sleek new logo that exemplifies what makes Mojang Studios the company it is: play. In fact, the word "mojang" apparently translates to "gadget" in old Swedish. Who knew? That's why the individual characters that make up the new logo are called Gizmos, and they are the new face of Mojang Studios.

The studio isn't changing, they're simply adopting an image that better aligns with the group they've become over the last few years. The name makes complete sense, and I'm a big fan of the up-to-date logo (especially in GIF form). All of this because everything Mojang Studios does is backed by creativity and fun. They also revealed that a programmer that joined recently actually learned how to code using Minecraft!
