Late last week, we broke the news about offline mapping data being updated by Nokia’s HERE team. In case you missed it, you’ll want to download the latest version of your mapping data (not the app itself) for lots of small changes and refinements. Some of those changes include house numbers for seven European countries, extended woodland coverage and Hindi support.

When we spoke with HERE team member Pino Bonetti about what the update entailed, he promised one more ‘surprise’ coming on Monday. Well, looking at our calendar, that day is today, and as it turns out, the Sochi Olympics are on Nokia’s radar.

In a tweet sent out by the HERE team, they revealed their detailed, offline mapping data support for the winter Olympics, due to take place in a few weeks in Sochi, Russia:

“Ready to visit #Sochi? With our latest map update you can easily find your way there, even offline”

Sure, many of us won’t be able to take advantage of it, but it goes to show you that Nokia, as always, have their fingers on the pulse of pop culture and major events. Windows Phone is actually doing fairly well in Russia too, these days, so we’re glad to see the focus on HERE Maps for this major sporting occasion.

Nokia's HERE Maps join numerous other official Sochi apps for the 2014 Winter Olympics, keeping Windows Phone up to date for the masses.
