Official YouTube app has gone missing in some Markets

Sorry folks, we don't have too much to go on here just yet, but we have received numerous tips from readers like yourself that the Official YouTube app from Microsoft is no longer available in the Marketplace in some areas. This seems to have started a few days ago.

This does not apply to the U.S. market but does apply to some in Europe (all?) and at least Singapore too. Could this have to do with Microsoft filing a complaint against Google via the European Union? If you recall, last March Microsoft's Brad Smith blogged about Google's unfair search practices and how they were restricting YouTube, resulting in a sub-par user experience on Windows Phone:

"Unfortunately, Google has refused to allow Microsoft’s new Windows Phones to access this YouTube metadata in the same way that Android phones and iPhones do. As a result, Microsoft’s YouTube “app” on Windows Phones is basically just a browser displaying YouTube’s mobile Web site, without the rich functionality offered on competing phones. Microsoft is ready to release a high quality YouTube app for Windows Phone. We just need permission to access YouTube in the way that other phones already do, permission Google has refused to provide."

Our bet? These two are definitely linked. We'll try to find out more, but in the meantime, lets do a roll-call in comments of countries affected. Austria? Check. Belgium?...

Thanks, Marcus H. and Borutes, for the heads up!

I'm in the UK too and ever since I've had my HD7 its always directed me to the m.youtube.com site, that's why I've always used the HTC Youtube App instead. I thought that was the "app" similar to what my Blackberry used to do too.

Belgium: I still have a YouTube app installed on my phone, but it indeed redirect to the m.youtube.com website. I can't find it anymore on the marketplace, however.

It's gone in Belgium. I flashed a custom ROM and I thought that was the problem, but apparently it isn't.

we hadd a official youtube app? you mean the programe that lets us watch Vids by sending us to the web site? ( witch is NOT an app btw ) if so , CANADA still has it..

I think it's about time Microsoft start their own video sharing site. I'm tired of google, and I'm getting tired with how slow youtube has been

It can if it's done right. Also, it depends on how well it's integrated with all their new services. Imagine it being tied to your Live account across all Live services, even Xbox. Like being able to seamlessly upload film clips from games on your Xbox to the service so you can share it with your xbox friends or social networks, uploading videos recorded on your Windows Phone, being able to access all the videos you uploaded from your PC, Windows Phone and Xbox, and stream them instantly straight from the Zune Hub. Even being able to upload videos from your skydrive. That's just a few ideas. There's so much more they can do with it if they really wanted to

I just got my first WP7 phone today and I downloaded the Microsoft app and noticed it just brought me to the mobile site... I guess this explains why. The HTC app seems to work fine.

It always did that. MS never had a real app. But even that browser/app **** is gone in some countries. So if you buy a new phone in those countries, you can't watch Youtube videos. (well, unless you download another app and search for it, but you can't click links and watch the videos)

Good riddance. Google has removed so much functionality from it, it might as well not even exist.Everyone should do themselves a favor and download SuperTube.
