RAVPower Deluxe Portable Charger, power in your pocket

Portable power has become rather portable these days and the RAVPower Deluxe 15000mAh Portable Charger hopes to fill your emergency power needs.

The portable charger (model RP-PB19) has duel charging capabilities, an LED light to help you find your way in the dark and enough juice to recharge your Windows Phone several times over. The compact size helps make the RAVPower portable, even pocketable (jacket or back pocket that is).

If you are in the market for a portable charger that won't weigh your backpack or briefcase down, the RAVPower Deluxe isn't a bad option to consider.

Design

Running down the stat sheet for the RAVPower 15000mAh charger you will find the following.

  • Capacity; 15000mah
  • Output: 5V / 2.4A and 5V / 2.1A
  • Input: DC 5V / 1.5A
  • Weight: 11.3 ounces
  • Size: 5 x 3.2 x .86 inches

In practical terms, the RAVPower is about the size of two Lumia 925's stacked on top of each other and maybe a smidgen heavier. The charger has a bit of heft to it but not enough to make the RAVPower charger feel cumbersome.

The layout has your charging ports and LED light at the top of the charger and the power-button resting on the top side of the charger. A large LED indicator light spans the width of the charger, just above the power button.

The battery has a matte black finish with metal/aluminum sides. From build quality to appearance, RAVPower did a nice job with the 15000mAh charger.

Performance

The RAVPower charger comes supplied with the following.

  • Two USB to Micro-USB charging cables
  • One Micro-USB to Samsung 30-pin connector
  • One Micro-USB to Mini-USB connector
  • Travel Pouch
  • Product Documentation

The charger can re-charge two devices at once and with 15000mAh of juice and should be able to replenish your devices several times over. Charging the 15000mAh charger can be done through a USB port on your computer or through a USB wall mount plug.

Overall Impression

Back-up batteries or portable chargers aren't exactly the most glamourous items to review. It can be challenging to go beyond the specs and that the device actually works. In using the RAVPower over the past week, here are some of my observations.

I liked the size of the RAVPower 15000mAh charger. It doesn't take up much room in my backpack and I can plug in my Windows Phone, rest it on top of the battery and it won't take up much space either. The flashlight isn't a bad touch and can help light things up as your digging around your backpack, suitcase, briefcase or other area for plugs and cords.

Recharging times wasn't terrible (about an hour for my Lumia 920 to recharge) and while the re-charging time won't set any land-speed records, you'll be able to use your device while it juices up.

What I don't care too much for with the RAVPower charger is the lack of a charging cord for my laptop or Surface tablet. I can understand the complexity of providing a charging adapter for laptops with so many different plugs and such out there. But being able to connect the RAVPower to a Surface shouldn't be that difficult, right?

Still, while I wouldn't mind seeing more diversity with the RAVPower charger as is, it is a nice option to consider when shopping for portable power. The RAVPower RP-PB19 Deluxe 15000mAh Portable Charger is currently running in the neighborhood of $60 through Amazon.com.
