[Update] Red Dead Redemption bringing the Wild West to Xbox One with backwards compatibility

Update: It seems that Microsoft have blocked Red Dead Redemption on Xbox One by forcing players to download an unavailable update. Still, it's worth taking the early leak as confirmation that Red Dead Redemption is on its way, along with Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Left 4 Dead 2, Alan Wake's American Nightmare and various other Xbox 360 classics that seemed to appear ahead of schedule. The original article is below.

Update 2: Xbox's Major Nelson just posted a statement on reddit confirming that the backwards compatible titles leaked early while in a testing phase: "Microsoft tests all Xbox 360 games with our emulator to ensure a quality experience across a breadth of titles. Due to an error, some of the games currently in test were accidentally made available. We have since removed access to those games, and apologize for any confusion this may have caused. We will have more information on upcoming releases soon." Stay tuned for the official announcement when it happens.

Ever since Microsoft announced backwards compatibility support to play Xbox 360 games on the Xbox One, there have been a few titles folks kept shouting for. Red Dead Redemption is one of those, and now, it looks like it's happening.

Support for the game seems to have leaked out and some have been able to successfully get Rockstar's Wild West extravaganza installed on their consoles.

We should point out that nothing official has been released at this time by either Microsoft or Rockstar. At the time of writing getting the game to install seems to require something of a workaround, which the guys over at ICXM have detailed. Part of it seems to be that you're only able to do it right now if you bought a digital copy of the game.

Red Dead Redemption came into our lives in 2010. While far removed from the stylings of Rockstar's signature franchise, Grand Theft Auto, there were similarities in its open world approach and sold around 14 million copies. To date it has been a top three request on the list of desired backwards compatible titles. While some will have to wait a little while longer, it looks like there's going to be a lot of happy cowboys hitting the trails very soon.
