Sid Meier's Pirates! pillages the Xbox Deal of the Week

The Xbox Deal of the Week program is running on all cylinders lately. Last week the excellent Zombies!!! went on sale for the first time. Now this week we get another game’s first sale. Sid Meier’s Pirates! is currently marked down from $2.99 to $1.99. That’s not a lot of booty, as the seamen say.

In Pirates! gamers play as the son of a man whose family was unjustly imprisoned by a nobleman in the 1600s. The path to rescue them is fraught with peril, as he’s forced into the life of a pirate. From there, players must form alliances with some nations while warring on others, collecting treasure, upgrading their ship, and hiring new crewmen all the while. Pirates! is something of a strategy title, but it packs a wide variety of gameplay, including ship battles, sword fighting, city bombardment, and even dancing. How else are you going to romance those ladies?

Note that Pirates! is a challenging game. Despite being based on the relatively modern original Xbox version, the tutorial information and general setup of the game aren’t as intuitive as the average game nowadays. Some of the Achievements are pretty tough, especially the one for scoring a combo of 150 in the dancing minigame, which only 9 people have managed to unlock at True Achievements.

Still, there is nothing quite like Pirates! on Windows Phone, and that alone makes it worth a look. The lovely 3D graphics make sailing the seas (seven by my count) and romancing the ladies almost as enjoyable as real life. This way, you don’t even have to risk developing scurvy.

Sid Meier’s Pirates! will be on sale for $1.99 for one week only starting Wednesday, but many readers are already seeing the discounted price. The download weighs in at a hefty 225 MB. If you’ve got a passion for pirating, get it here on the Windows Phone Store.

i might bite. Haven't purchased a game since Let's Golf was on sale. I want Carcassone, but I might wait on it and let Pirates tide me over (no pun intended)
