Skype gets an update for the app and network

Skype for Windows Phone

First the Windows Phone news on Skype. The app has been updated to version 1.1.0. It is our understanding the updated is mostly "under the hood" stuff to improve performance and fix some bugs. If you haven't seen the update being pushed out, as is the case in my area, hopefully you'll see it soon.

The other news on Skype is that it appears the Skype network has received a slight overhaul. Microsoft is replacing some peer to peer client machines with Linux boxes to provide a more stable and secure network. These supernodes will handle a significantly larger traffic load.

According to Microsoft the network improvements are a part of their ongoing commitment to improve the Skype user experience.

This has not changed the underlying nature of Skype’s peer-to-peer (P2P) architecture, in which supernodes simply allow users to find one another (calls do not pass through supernodes). We believe this approach has immediate performance, scalability and availability benefits for the hundreds of millions of users that make up the Skype community.

It's nice to see Microsoft invest in Skype's infrastructure. If you haven't downloaded Skype for your Windows Phone, it is a free app that you can grab here at the Marketplace.

Isn't it ironic?

Dont you remember when Microsoft bought hotmail? At time of acquisition it was all UNIX based. Microsoft kept the UNIX infrastructure for some years while working in the background to make the move to windows boxes. Today hotmail runs only on windows servers. These things takes time to migrate. I bet that in five years, Skype will have a windows only backend infrastructure.

Exactly. It's not like Microsoft can snap their fingers and the whole Skype infrastructure becomes Microsoft-based just like that.

i just wonder..... where did they say about linux? if you say at least give the source because nothing you wrote in the "according to microsoft" mentioned linux. anyway its good to know Skype is getting better, most people i know use it so its nice

I'm assuming Skype must've already been using Linux boxes pre-acquisition hence it makes sense for MS to use the same technology for the time being if it will improve performance. I could be wrong and MS just sees the Linux as a viable option. Either way I don't think it's a big deal they're using Linux.

Keep the updates coming, I love going into the marketplace and seeing an update waiting for me. Strange satisfaction

Still not working in the background, why does it work better on the ps vita then on a windows phone -_-

Despite all the missing Features in the WP app. One day I made a Skype call from the parking area of a shopping centre here in Germany over 3G with phone tethered to car stereo to my sister in Spain sitting at her PC and the call quality was amazing. Crystal clear. Even better than via normal phone carrier. Love it.
