Cat Story, a feline adventure for Windows Phone 8

Cat Story is an odd little Windows Phone 8 game that sends you to an imaginary world filled with a wide range of interesting characters you must help build a new life. Game play is a mixture of time management, puzzle and scavenger hunt styles.

The cast of characters in Cat Story have been shipwrecked on an uncharted island and a collection of quests to find all the survivors along with building a new community awaits. Cat Story is a well animated Windows Phone 8 with plenty of puzzling missions to tackle. The only concern is that game flow structure is a little loose and you often find yourself going with the flow.

We’ve written about our “Newly Discovered Windows Phone Games” forum thread before. That’s where I learned about Pocket Avenger, a game that starts out fun but gets evil really fast. Still, our forum users are great at ferreting out new games for everyone to try. The latest game I discovered within the thread is Machinarium from Czech developer Amanita Design.

Windows Phone already hosts a variety of Hidden Object Puzzle Adventure (HOPA) games from publishers like Artifex Mundi. Those titles borrow elements from traditional PC adventure games, but dilute them a bit in order to maintain casual appeal. Machinarium is a full-blown adventure game that made its name on Steam before migrating to Windows Phone. If you enjoy the adventure genre, prepare to be amazed by Amanita’s first Windows Phone title.

During our coverage of Casual Connect a few months back, we interviewed Polish developer Artifex Mundi about some of their adventure titles. I also promised to start reviewing those titles, and now it’s time to do just that.

First up is our review of Nightmares from the Deep: the Cursed Heart for Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8. Cursed Heart is the first game in the Nightmares from the Deep series of hidden object puzzle adventure games (HOPA). With a mix of gameplay styles and plenty of ghostly pirate adventure, Cursed Heart is a great introduction to Artifex Mundi’s games. Read on for our full review!

We made mention the other day of Dark Lands, a Windows Phone game under development and sponsored by the Microsoft/Nokia AppCampus. Dark Lands is an infinity running game with a combat and RPG element.

In a nutshell, you run your character through various obstacles, collecting gems to use for upgrades and stopping along the way to battle monsters, soldiers and other enemies. We've gotten our hands on a short video snippet of game play and again, the game looks good.

Draw your way out of trouble with DrawaStickman EPIC

DrawaStickman EPIC is adventure game for your Windows Phone where you have to guide a stickman in a quest to save his friend. DrawaStickman EPIC is similar to Max and the Magic Marker but more minimalistic graphics and you draw your player (as well as your friend).

The game has fourteen levels and a bonus level in which you use a pencil to draw various elements to help you tackle each levels challenges. DrawaStickman EPIC is a nice game for your Windows Phone and not a shabby way to pass the time with.

Windows Phone Xbox Live Review: Ghostscape

Adventure games were once a thriving genre, filled with absolute classics from LucasArts, Sierra, and others. These days, they exist in much smaller number, but they do keep coming thanks to TellTale games and the occasional indie developer. Ghostscape is a product of the latter. Originating as free flash game on Kongregate, Microsoft eventually picked it up as a mobile Xbox Live title. The development staff doubled from one to two people, and that brings us to this non-free version of Ghostscape. It retains a strong low budget indie vibe that will likely scare off mainstream players, but adventure fans will want to give the game a look.

With all the news of new phones and 4G LTE speeds coming out of CES, let us not forget about the nearly as exciting world of Xbox Live game updates. After all, if you bought a buggy game, you’re probably worried more about getting it working right than upgrading to a new phone. On that note, Psionic Games has kindly provided information on the recent Ghostscape update.

Ghostscape version 1.1 release notes:

  • Fixed translation error in the Spanish build that was causing lockups
  • Issues with gameplay elements like orbs not appearing or resetting properly have been addressed

Before the update, items sometimes wouldn’t spawn or players wouldn’t get credit for finding all of the collectibles. Those problems should be a thing of the past, so now you can play through the game freely without fear of missing out on Achievements. WPCentral has also learned that the developers have another update in store which will add free ringtones and perhaps a few UI improvements.

Ghostscape is a first-person horror-themed adventure game. It’s short and has delightfully easy Achievements – see our review for more details..

Psionic Games’ Ghostscape costs $2.99 and there is a free trial. Brave souls can get it here on the Marketplace.

Shuffle Party isn’t the only Xbox Live release today. Psionic Games’ Ghostscape has also emerged from the crypts and onto the Marketplace.

Ghostscape is an old-school, first-person adventure game. Players enter a creepy haunted house, solve puzzles, and take photographs of ghosts to eliminate them. Along the way you’ll collect diary pages and piece together the house’s sordid history.

The Windows Phone version adds new puzzles, areas, and items to the original design. The Achievements mostly revolve around photographing everything in the game, but there’s also one for beating it in less than 20 minutes. Hope you like speed runs!

It’s been a while since we learned about a mobile Xbox Live game’s release date more than a week in advance. Well, we can now mark November 30 on our calendars, as that’s when Ghostscape is coming to Windows Phone, according to the friendly and communicative developer, Psionic Games.

Ghostscape originated as a free flash game, which you can play right here on Kongregate. It is an old-school adventure game, played from a first-person perspective. Enter a creepy haunted house, solve puzzles, and take photographs of ghosts to eliminate them. Along the way you’ll collect diary pages and piece together the house’s sordid history. It was once the location of the Republican Convention. BOO! Just kidding.

The Windows Phone version adds new puzzles, areas, and items to the original design. The Achievements mostly revolve around photographing everything in the game, but there’s also one for beating it in less than 20 minutes. Hope you like speed runs!

Ghostscape comes to life on Wednesday, November 30. It will cost $2.99.
