Update: Files have been updated to make the app more stable and reliable and indeed it does work better now. (5PM ET)

Windows Phone Hacker has released a new “wrapper” tool called 'Seven-Eighter' that reportedly makes manually installing the 7.8 update less cumbersome than downloading all the files yourself. The app comes in x86 and x64 and is a simple executable that you run on your PC (you’ll need to give it permission in Windows 8).

In theory, it’s the same method we detailed in our CAB file post yesterday---you specify the languages on your device and then it fetches the files for you, all through a progress-bar UI.

Since Windows Phone OS updates are cumulative but iterative in the process, you’ll have to go up through Tango before proceeding to 7.8 meaning there will be a few cycles of updates.

Windows Phone App Review: Dad's Taxi

For those with children, ever feel as though you drive a taxi? Dad's Taxi is a novelty app for your Windows Phone that might help you have a little fun with your kids.

Dad's Taxi uses your Windows Phone location services to track distances traveled and then converts it into metered rates. Very similar to a taxi cab's meter. You can use the app to charge your kids a fortune the next time you have to cart them to the mall, the theatre or where ever duty calls.

One thing that keeps surprising us is how good Microsoft's Bing service is and how much better it is becoming (Anyone notice how Google now has similar themes and even re-vamped their image search to look just like Bing?).

Evidently this week, Microsoft did some more upgrades, changing some of the fonts, making the colors "warmer", improving the layouts and even traffic color.

The other cool addition is the ability to calculate your cab fare based on the trip you enter. While not exactly useful for non-city folk on a daily basis, it sure could be useful for when you travel and need to know how to plan your trip. You can try it out by going right here (you need Silverlight installed, shocker).

Of course the not so great news is that none of these features are yet available on the mobile version, something which is not too unexpected unfortunately these days. Still, we can't help but think that things like the cab fare calculator would be awesome on Windows Phone 7--so lets just hope they figure out a way to do that before October.
