celebration

If you’re a current Zune Pass subscriber, you may want to check your email. Microsoft has just sent out the Xbox Music update details for those who are using Zune Pass and what’s more, they’re throwing in a 1,000 MS Points to celebrate.

Those points (worth $12.50 or an average album) can be used “on any of the music, video, or game content on Xbox LIVE”. (Wait, we’re still calling it Xbox LIVE?)

The other day when Nokia announced that their music streaming service was headed to the US, they mentioned a special concert to celebrate featuring the band Green Day. At the time, no date or event was mentioned and instead we were told to tune in later.

Now, details have come forth about that big show—somewhat.

Evidently Green Day will be playing a concert at Irving Plaza here in New York City, on Saturday September 15th.

Unfortunately this isn’t an open concert ala Nicki Minaj and instead, fans have to enter into a contest via Facebook. Green Day only wants the “biggest fans” to go to this show, so in turn, you need to act like a PR agency for the quasi-pop punk band by advertising the heck out of ‘em.

The popular word game Wordament went to full Xbox LIVE status this week and in our previous story on the brain straining game we mentioned how Microsoft would be promoting the app with a Wordament Tournament.

Happening right now at the Bellevue, WA Microsoft store, there's quite a crowd there evidently getting into the game. With food, giveaways and prizes (no human sacrifices though), it looks to be a fun time and a great celebration for a unique Windows Phone experience.

If you're there, send us some more pics and we'll throw 'em in this post. Also leave some comments based on what you've experienced . Pick up the free game here in the Marketplace, if you haven't already.

Update: "Here is a picture of WicketEwok in the left and DiscoPigeon on the right, two of the top players going head to head."  Thanks, Dustin S., for the photos!

Live in the US? Live near New York City, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles or San Francisco? Then you'll want to head over here to the Windows Phone Facebook page to reserve yourself a spot, as Microsoft is set to throw two-night parties in those cities to celebrate the launch of some new Windows Phones.

Free drinks, live music from some indie bands and a chance to see and play with the the HTC Radar, Titan, Samsung Focus S and Flash. There will be food, a lounge and a chance to play others in video games, which sounds like a grand old time, if you ask us.

And yes, at least some of us will be attending (cough, me, New York City), so perhaps we'll see you there. But reserve now as space is limited! You will need a Facebook account though.

Bonus cool feature: You can send your e-Ticked to your Windows Phone, which you use to get into the event.

Bonus cool feature 2: First 20 registrants for each night get a VIP upgrade...go go!

WP7 style Birthday cake

This is pretty awesome and it looks delicious. Just a shame I wouldn't want to eat it and keep it on display instead. Twitter user Alper Özçetin celebrated his birthday with a twist this year. A full size Windows Phone 7 styled Samsung Birthday cake, isn't this every user's dream? Designed by Duygu Dem, we noticed the missing back and search buttons, but it's still darn impressive.

And to have a little fun, looks like the Windows Phone OS team had themselves a little parade to celebrate that whole "RTM" milestone last week, to which we also give a salute.

While it's too early to tell if Microsoft will regain market share, we think that Windows Phone 7 certainly goes the distance in amping up the competition. For a such a turnaround in 20 months, Microsoft seems to have their mojo back and we're pretty psyched.

(Oh and yes, the joke is that these photos were taken with a Sprint HTC EVO)

Check out the rest of the gallery over at Flickr for some cheesy fun.

[Thanks, Tim!]
