celebrity

File this under human interest story, but for those of you don’t game much, you may not know Randy Pitchford. He’s the very vocal and prominent face of Gearbox Software (www.gearboxsoftware.com), who is riding high on the success of its Borderlands 2 game (of which numerous writers here at Windows Phone Central are huge fans; Sam still sticks to Halo, sigh).

Microsoft has a nice collection of celebrity endorsements for Windows Phone 8 from Singer Gwen Stefani to Actress Jessica Alba to Olympic Athlete Kerri Walsh. Cam Newton, NFL Quarterback for the Carolina Panthers (and former Auburn University QB), has also jumped into the action.

Cam is featured in four video spots, each with a slightly different ending such as the "Poundcake and French Fries" version above.

To highlight Cam's Windows Phone experience, Microsoft is holding a poll over on Twitter to see which ending to his Windows Phone commercial should be aired on January 20th during the NFC Championship football game. There are four endings to choose from and you can catch the remaining three just past the break.  To cast your vote and to see the live poll results, just head on over to the Windows Phone Blog.

Just a shame they didn't have a "War Eagle" version...

American investor and businessman Mark Cuban, who owns NBA team Dallas Mavericks, recently carried out an AMA (Ask Me Anything) on Reddit. The session was hit by a number of questions from fellow users, spanning a number of topics. Most notably was a conversation that was started by ashton90, who wanted to know what kind of laptop Cuban owns, as well as MP3 player.

Either Nokia is good at product placement or they're getting a lot of interest because LeVar Burton, also known as Lieutenant Commander Geordi La Forge on Star Trek: The Next Generation, is now using one.

In a simple two part tweet, the Reading Rainbow celeb stated "I luva my Lumia" and it was causing a bit of a stir amongst his readers (some for, some against).

Burton evidently picked up a glossy-white AT&T edition 900, the same one we're using ourselves and so far he seems to be happy with it. It will be interesting to see how he progresses with the flagship device over the next few days, after all the man was the chief engineer of the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-E), so figuring out Windows Phone should be a breeze.

Regardless, welcome to the club, LeVar!

Are you working from home and still sport a CRT monitor with a keyboard that was manufactured in the 90s? Well this competition could be for you. The Windows Phone team are offering a chance for a lucky winner to receive a home office makeover, with celebrity designer and media personality Courtney Cachet.

The prize will include:

  • A home office makeover consultation with Courtney Cachet.
  • A package from Microsoft - including a new Windows Phone, a Windows PC, and Microsoft Office.
  • Home office décor and accessories from popular online retailer hayneedle.com.

Entering the competition is simple (should you live in the U.S. of course - not eligible for everyone else) just send a tweet to both @WindowsPhone and @CACHETLIFESTYLE on the social network, that includes a picture or description of your home office and why it needs a makeover. Be sure to include the hashtag #WindowsPhoneWorks.

Check out the video after the break where we see Cachet handing out free Windows Phones to the public after a quick demonstration on features available, as well as a quick run through of the competition. For more information and the fine print, check out the official blog post over on the Windows Phone team blog.

Brandon Watson is persistent, we all know that. In his continued attempt to woo all potential-converts, especially those of a high celebrity profile, Watson is trying to get Windows Phones in the hands of those who can spread the word.

We've seen this before with CNet's Molly Wood and cartoonist Scott Adams and now basketball's Blake Griffin (of the LA Clippers) is the latest to be swayed. Complaining in a Tweet about his iPhone crashing, Brandon reached out to Griffin and his brother (the two are evidently close) in an attempt to get them to switch. Griffin has accepted the offer so we'll have to wait and see on what he thinks about it in a few weeks.

Our bet? We'll hear about how it doesn't have Words with Friends yet.

Recently, on April 29th, the 18th annual Race to Erase MS gala was held at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza in Century City, California.

In turn, Paris Hilton, Rachel Leigh Cook, Daniel Gillies, Musician Brett Anderson and Cindy Crawford were all there along with Microsoft, who evidently was using the event to promote Windows Phone amongst the celebs.

We're not sure if they we able to keep the HTC HD7s on hand, but from a cursory look on Twitter (yes, we went there), none so far are using for their daily driver.

...And that's your useless celeb-Windows Phone news of the day.
