Commercials

We have seen a lot of anti-Apple iPad commercials coming out of Microsoft lately; they have been touting the Surface’s ability to manage devices via a built in full USB port and the ability to project to larger displays using the device’s HD video out port. Microsoft also attacks the Samsung Galaxy Tab’s inability to use multiple accounts.

In the future, Nokia will be a services company instead of making phones. Of course, that’s glossing over the fact that their hardware division will live on, just under the Microsoft banner. It’s also important because their HERE mapping technology is quite impressive.

Nokia has now released three videos highlighting some of the core HERE technologies, many of which you Lumia owners will be familiar with. LiveSight, My Commute and Transit are all standard apps on Lumia Windows Phones, though we bet that the company will be extending them to other platforms in the future.

Microsoft and AT&T aren't slowing down with marketing the new Nokia Lumia 1020 as they have released a new thirty second ad for the Windows Phone. We've already seen one commercial from AT&T highlighting the Lumia 1020's "zoom later" feature and the latest focuses on the Lumia 1020 being the first smartphone to "put the camera first".

While the Lumia 1020 is a well rounded Windows Phone, the center piece is easily the 41MP PureView camera. With optical image stabilization, the Xenon flash, Zeiss optics, BSI sensor and the "zoom later" feature the Lumia 1020 is definitely a Windows Phone with the photographer in mind.  We've been very impressed with the Lumia 1020 (here's our review) and tend to agree that nothing else comes close.

Have you seen this ad air on TV yet? Have your friends noticed? Let us know in comments.

Nokia has unleashed the zombie apocalypse in support of the new Lumia 925 Windows Phone. Well... sort of.

The latest ad focuses on how the Lumia 925's low-light camera performance can reduce the need for a flash. All the while suggesting that the flash dependency other smartphones have will turn you into the walking dead (red-eye and all).  Shame the Lumia 925 couldn't have turned the afflicted back to normal by snapping a picture of them.

Then again, part of me had hoped the commercial ended with the zombies breaking out to a rendition of Michael Jackson's "Thriller".

Last week Microsoft asked you to vote for which Windows Phone commercial from NFL Quarterback Cam Newton should air during the NFC Championship pre-game show. You had the choice of four endings to the commercial using a different catch phrase at the end.

The "Peanut Butter, Jelly" version, shown above was the runner-up and will air during both the NFC and AFC Championship games.

If you're the type who would rather tune in this Sunday, January 21st, during the pre-Game show and see which version won, don't stray any further. If you can't stand the anticipation, you can find the winning version after the break.

Still think they should have had a War Eagle version....

Microsoft has a nice collection of celebrity endorsements for Windows Phone 8 from Singer Gwen Stefani to Actress Jessica Alba to Olympic Athlete Kerri Walsh. Cam Newton, NFL Quarterback for the Carolina Panthers (and former Auburn University QB), has also jumped into the action.

Cam is featured in four video spots, each with a slightly different ending such as the "Poundcake and French Fries" version above.

To highlight Cam's Windows Phone experience, Microsoft is holding a poll over on Twitter to see which ending to his Windows Phone commercial should be aired on January 20th during the NFC Championship football game. There are four endings to choose from and you can catch the remaining three just past the break.  To cast your vote and to see the live poll results, just head on over to the Windows Phone Blog.

Just a shame they didn't have a "War Eagle" version...

One of the Nokia Lumia 920 Windows Phone's latest cameos is in Radio Shack's recent television advertisement. There's not much to the sixteen second spot beyond a teenager showing off her mad texting skills at the amazement of her elder.

According to the promo, Radio Shack is offering the AT&T Lumia 920 for $79.99 after two year contractual discounts (new purchase or upgrades). Which isn't a bad deal on a very nice Windows Phone.  You may want to check the availability of the Lumia 920 at your local Radio Shack before you head to the store.  We had trouble finding the Lumia 920 listed online and the $79.99 might be an in-store only deal.

The other day we mentioned how the Windows Phone team was preparing the first wave of an ad campaign, with the slogan of Windows Phone being "reinvented around you". To jog your memory, the two videos we've seen so far feature Gwen Stefani and Jessica Alba. We've just received word that those videos will begin airing tonight in the U.S. with new ones featuring Andy Samberg and Cam Newton coming in later weeks.

You can also look for additional ads to start appearing in the UK, France and Germany. What's interesting, is that Microsoft will take a local approach to those markets and use relevant celebrities and apps to highlight the platform.

Nokia Lumia 710 ad hits the airways

The Nokia Lumia 710 became available only yesterday at T-Mobile and we've already seen it spotlighted in one T-Mobile commercial and now it's taking center stage in yet another television ad. The thirty second spot focuses on how the Windows Phone can keep you connected to amazing everyday.  From keeping in touch with friends to finding a good ice cream parlor.

The ad does a nice job of catching your attention and shining a little attention on the latest Windows Phone. We've received tips from readers who caught this ad throughout the night and it appears that Nokia has hit the ground running to let everyone know they are back in town.

One of the more recent Windows Phone commercials keys in on the Samsung Focus Flash and group messaging. Plus it highlights one of man's worst shopping nightmares.

The commercial has aired with some frequency here in the States and I've also notice Microsoft has sponsored several USA Network shows such as Psych. The ads and show sponsorships definitely pushes Windows Phones more into the spotlight.

Now if we could only get the carriers to join in on the push.

There's a new Windows Phone advertisement out on Youtube that is highlighting the Samsung Omnia W that hit overseas markets late last month. The Omnia W succeeds the Omnia 7 and is basically the overseas version of the AT&T Samsung Focus Flash.

The minute long ad focuses on the Super AMOLED screen of the Omnia W and covers key features of the Windows Phone platform including the Peoples Hub, SkyDrive, Video Calling and gaming. It's a nice looking advertisement that not only shows you the capabilities of a Windows Phone but also the wide range of consumers the Omnia W can appeal to.

The latest Windows Phone ad from Microsoft showcases BING, voice commands, and those pesky moving walkways at airports.

While the ad pokes fun at anyone who has tripped on the moving walkways, it highlights the convenience of Windows Phone 7 nicely. Just a few button pushes, a voice command and BING jumps into action without tripping you up.

Friday Fun: Commercials

Go ahead and admit it, T-Mobile may have turned heads when they were the first to release the Touch Pro 2 but what really turned heads was the company bringing back Catherine Zeta Jones back as a spokesperson. It added a certain zest back to their commercials.

Sprint, AT&T, Verizon and even Altel have cranked out some enjoyable commercials over the years. From Dieter Chad at Alltel to the "what if firefighters ran Congress?" commercials from Sprint these commercials make an impression on the viewer. You may not remember the sales pitch but the slogan, punch line or even the spokesperson keeps the company fresh in your mind.

Follow the break for a few more memorable commercials from wireless service providers.

A Walk Down Memory Lane

With all the new phones expected to hit the shelves in the coming months, when you look back at wireless communications the industry has come a long way. MobileSyrup.com has stumbled upon some old cell phone commercials over at YouTube.

For those who are too young to remember the days of bag phones and flip phones, these commercials will give you a glimpse of what the "old timers" had to deal with.  While it may be hard to see, these products were actually innovative and "high tech" for their time.
