cross platform

Clash of Clans is one of the most profitable mobile games in existence. But developer Supercell has so far refused to bring Clash to Windows Phone. That refusal opens up the doors for companies like Gameloft to swoop in and make their own Clash-like games. But Gameloft’s Total Conquest sits on the buggy side of things, so maybe you’re looking for a different game to play involving clans and clashes.

That’s where Game Insight’s Cloud Raiders comes in. A competitive raiding game set within a Skylanders-like world of floating islands, Cloud Raiders shows loads of polish even during its first official month of release on Windows Phone. With casual strategic battles, base building, clan support, and unrivaled cross-platform support, Cloud Raiders is both a great replacement for Clash of Clans and an impressive game all on its own. Read on for our full review.

Battle Monkeys is a new Windows Phone 8 game that has had it's fair share of success over on iOS and Android. It's a 3D combat game that can be played in single player fashion or an online, multiplayer mode.

With Battle Monkeys already being established on other platforms, you shouldn't have any problem finding opponents to battle.

Battle Monkeys has challenging game play, nice graphics and whether you're battling others or the computer it comes across as an entertaining game for our Windows Phone 8 devices.

Earlier this week, Gameloft announced they will bring their latest arcade racer Asphalt 8: Airborne to both Windows Phone and Windows 8. Phone owners have enjoyed its predecessor for quite some time now, but Microsoft’s tablet and PC operating system has gone without – until now.

Asphalt 7: Heat has just launched on Windows 8 and RT with full Xbox support. It includes some impressive features such as Xbox 360 controller support, glitchy Play/Pause/Resume connectivity and even cross-platform multiplayer with the Windows Phone 8 version! We’ve put the Windows 8 game through its paces in order to bring you this timely review.

We dished out praises like crazy to the original Full House Poker game for Windows Phone. It was the first Windows Phone 7 game to have proper avatar support and is still the only one, really. A picture of the user’s avatar on their stats screen like AlphaJax and Wordament have doesn’t really count; users want to play games as their avatars.

Viber beta for Windows Phone has been available over in the Windows Phone Marketplace for some time but with some limitations. We are now getting indications that Viber is still working on the Windows Phone version and a full version is expected in the coming months.

For those not familiar with Viber, it is a cross platform app for messaging and voice calls. It is currently available for iOS and Android systems. The Windows Phone version, in beta, only supports the messaging portion of the equation.

HeyWire free texting app now on Windows Phone

HeyWire (see website) is a cross-platform app that enables users to text each other for free from the US and 45 other countries.  It sends SMS over any internet connection from iOS, Android, "dumb phones," and now, Windows Phone.

"We are very excited to provide the only free texting app in the Microsoft Marketplace -- a platform that Gartner predicts will capture the number two smartphone spot by 2015," said HeyWire founder and CEO Meredith Flynn-Ripley. "This was an important service for our company to bring to consumers, which continues HeyWire's mission to facilitate free global communications amongst groups of friends. Now, WP7 users can send and receive text messages with friends on multiple devices, quickly and easily."

HeyWire not only lets you connect across mobile platforms, but Twitter as well.  It has a simple, straight-forward user interface and can be downloaded for free here. Thanks, Amir, for the tip!

WhatsApp, the cross platform messenger for your Windows Phone, has been updated to version 1.4. Along with the ability to text across platforms (available for Android, Blackberry and the iPhone) WhatsApp also gives you the ability to send pictures, video messages and now voice notes.

While no official change log is available, it is our understanding that text is larger and sending images is now problem free. If you're seeing additional changes with the update, feel free to share them in the comments section.

You can grab WhatsApp here at the Marketplace. Keep in mind WhatsApp is a mango app so you'll need to be running Windows Phone 7.5.

Thanks goes out to Jon B for the tip!

Words by Post - Review

We've covered our fair share of word games for the Windows Phone. Some may argue that there are way too many word games in the Marketplace.  But, word games are an easy way to pass the time and can be entertaining, challenging and competitive.

Words by Post is such a game. Sure, it's another scrabble type game but Words by Post expands your opponent base by jumping platforms.  Words by Post is compatible with the games iPhone and Android versions.

Among the scrabble-type games,  AlphaJax may be the front runner with its fantastic appearance and large player base.  But the cross platform feature definitely makes a case for Words by Post to be the top dog.

Head on past the break to see how Words by Post measures up.

One thing there's no shortage of in the Marketplace is Scrabble-type games. Words by Post is one of those and is very similar to Alpha Jax (see AlphaJax vs Spell It!).

The difference though is Words by Post is also on the iPhone and Android and version 2.0 of the game just hit, bringing inter-play between those platforms. Yes, now you can play against your iPhone friends (if you have those) and presumably Android as well, making this one of the first Scrabble games to bring cross platform gaming to our system.

The game comes in two variates: free (ads in game) or paid ($2.99), features rankings, push notifications for turn-taking, shake to reorder tiles, chat, etc., making quite it robust. We like the sound of this and enjoy the game design so far, so it may be worth a spin.

Pick up the paid version here in the Marketplace or try out the free, ad-supported one here.

(Thanks, Ian H., for the tip!)
