event

Last night I was finally able to get my hands on all the Windows Phone devices here at the UK launch event. The impressions are by no means reviews but simply my feelings at this crucial hands-on moment.

Here are my thoughts from the evening as I get my hands on the HTC 8s and HTC 8x, Samsung ATIV S, Lumia 820 and of course the Lumia 920.

As we covered in our round-up of today's Windows Phone event, Microsoft has been an extremely busy bee indeed. Our Windows Phone forums have also been fairly active lately, particularly when our main website went down for some surprise maintenance. So what's new in the community? In case you were at work or preoccupied, you can now go back and re-watch the Windows 8 and Surface RT demonstrations and announcements from this morning. That’s the good news.

The bad news is this is still in Silverlight and you have to manually rewind back to the 1:17:45 mark (or 3:33:00 for Surface). And sorry for those scroll bars but you can blame Microsoft for that one. Hopefully Microsoft will have a YouTube version up later in the day for the rest of you living in a non-Silverlight world aka probably most of you. (You can also watch it on Microsoft's site here).

Watch after the break...Thanks, Marco300, for the tip

Windows 8, the much anticipated PC OS, was just launched in China a few hours ago, although many are still waiting for October 26 - the fateful day. As we understand, the global launch of Windows 8 will be marked by not one single event, but a whole series of them. The launch will start in China (October 23rd 10:00am local time), and end with the US party on October 26.

Looks like Nokia might be set to have a big announcement in early November for Russia, perhaps to showcase the Lumia 920 Windows Phone.  Or maybe the Lumia 820?

Not much is said about what’s to be expected but the invite does reveal some clues.

Nokia is rightly pushing photography as the big draw for the next generation of Lumia devices. The Lumia 920 has seen a barrage of OIS video and night photography tests. So it doesn’t leave much to the imagination when we get an invite with a girl taking a photo and a bat in the background. Not too subtle a reference really but we get it.

Microsoft appears to be pushing out the golden envelopes for the final reveal-all of Windows Phone 8. The event is scant on actual details but the data is locked in for 5pm GMT on October 29th, London. This matches the upcoming event in San Francisco.

The events held so far have seen journalists physically restricted from properly playing with the OS, so aside from videos and SDKs precious few have any idea how well it works on a real device.

The Windows Phone User Group is back, and in full force it seems. To be held on Wednesday, October 17, 2012 from 6:30 PM - 9:00 PM, WPUG will once again be catering for developers to network, show off Windows Phone projects and to discuss aspects of the platform.

The WPGeek Developer Marketplace will be covered next Wednesday, as well as the possibility of some Windows Phone 8 hardware being present. We've previously been to WPUG meet-ups where Nokia has not only shown a friendly face, but has also sponsored the event itself, so there's certainly a chance of a device or two being present.

Our Rob Brand, Jay Bennett and myself will be heading along, so be sure to sign up for next week's event if you believe you'll be able to attend and we'll see you there.

How were you left feeling after HTC's Apollo event?

HTC announced a number of handsets at its Windows Phone event today, but how did it leave you? Were you impressed by the new hardware the manufacturer had to show off, or where you expecting more? It's easy to write off Windows Phone OEMs when Nokia plays such an important role in marketing and development of the platform.

The Lumia 820 and 920 set the bar fairly high and HTC had a lot to do to at least reach the heights Nokia is currently sat at in terms of quality. This is noticable in HTC's new approach to design with multiple colours available for both the 8X and 8S

The other day when Nokia announced that their music streaming service was headed to the US, they mentioned a special concert to celebrate featuring the band Green Day. At the time, no date or event was mentioned and instead we were told to tune in later.

Now, details have come forth about that big show—somewhat.

Evidently Green Day will be playing a concert at Irving Plaza here in New York City, on Saturday September 15th.

Unfortunately this isn’t an open concert ala Nicki Minaj and instead, fans have to enter into a contest via Facebook. Green Day only wants the “biggest fans” to go to this show, so in turn, you need to act like a PR agency for the quasi-pop punk band by advertising the heck out of ‘em.

Nokia hoping to dine on jellybeans today

As we all sit here on tenterhooks awaiting the coming announcement from Nokia and Microsoft, Nokia’s twitter account just posted something strange. In what appears to be a little knock directed at Google’s Android OS, Nokia say “Today we dine on Jellybeans”.

Nokia appears to be stepping up their PR antics in the run up to the announcement with placards at Samsung’s recent event and of course the teaser trailers. Considering how well regarded Jellybean is, Nokia must be feeling confident they have the goods on this fine day.

Nokia has released another short film on YouTube to further tease Windows Phone fans of tomorrow’s event in New York. Titled ‘Nearly There!’ the film shows a young lady explore the realm of shoes, or rather the colour selection available.

Much like the previous video we covered that hinted at augmented reality, this new clip is believed to be showing off the array of colours available for Lumia Windows Phones. The Nokia range of Windows Phones have sported a variety of themes, which has given the Finnish manufacturer a personalised edge against other platform OEMs.

With one short day to go before we finally see what Nokia has in its bag of tricks for us, they release yet another teaser, its too much, we know. Tomorrow of course is go day for the Nokia and Microsoft announcement in New York.

This one is very short at sixteen seconds, a lady walks down the street with her cans on whilst images of deals are superimposed on the shops. The information conveys the shops rating from Style Magazine along with “likes” from friends. The obvious thing to think here is of augmented reality, perhaps like that of Nokia City Lens that has just left beta.

We are ever so close to the 5th of September where it’s possible Nokia and Microsoft are planning to reveal all about Windows Phone 8. We still have much to learn about the next version of Windows Phone such as possible consumer features for the OS that include Xbox Live and music improvements, as well as anything else Microsoft may still have hidden up their sleeves.

While there is still much to learn about Windows Phone 8, a recent video release only adds to the mystery of what's in store for September 5th.
