Facebook Places

Social Scout is a Facebook Places app for our Windows Phone that is designed to help you explore what is nearby, find places, check-in to places, and find where your Facebook friends are. The app is from JDB Pocketware, developers of HandyScan, and was recently updated to version 1.1.

The Version 1.1 update of Social Scout brings a handful of notifications options to the table that include notifications when friends check-in close to you and notifications for likes/comments to your check-ins.

JDB Pocketware, developers of HandyScan, has a new Windows Phone app over in the Windows Phone Store. Social Scout is a Facebook Places app designed to help you explore what's nearby, find places, check-in and find out where your Facebook friends are.

While not developed or owned by Facebook, Social Scout taps into Facebook Places and lays out everything rather nicely across pages that show what places are nearby, where your friends have checked into, and a More Page that lists your most visited places, your check-ins, a "Feeling lucky" tile that will randomly select a restaurant for you to try, and a one touch check-in tile.

Facebook's dormant Places service axed

Facebook has finally killed Places, the seemingly dead check in service that's remained fairly inactive for sometime. It's available in the Facebook for Windows Phone app so what happens to users? Well, we have Foursquare of course, but if you don't use the service or another competitor there might be another option.

We recently covered Microsoft's We're In service which resembles Foursquare and this could well become an integrated answer for a large portion of WP7 owners. Unfortunately, for the time being it's only available to the U.S. and Israel.

On a personal note: my girlfriend uses Facebook Places quite a bit (only checking in), especially when she's in the UK. I've still not fully understood the concept behind letting everyone knowing where I am. If I look up nearby places I get the typical teenage act cool entries including "my bed (:", "cinema wiv sexy bf" and "sofa!!!!!". Surely we should be able to moderate entries in some way, I mean who's going to check into someone else's bed, sofa or cinema with the sexy boyfriend?

Facebook updated for Windows Phone 7

Your Windows Phone Facebook application has been updated. Version 1.1 brings support for Facebook Places and for tagging photos.

Facebook still lacks chat support and the ability to upload videos but this update is a step in the right direction.

Check your Marketplace Tile for the update on your Windows Phone or if you haven't installed the Facebook app yet, you can find it here (opens your Zune desktop).
