All good things must come to an end and so does the Windows Phone Challenge at Microsoft Stores in the US as April 12 was designated to be the last day (Evidently the contest is still going on in many stores)

Although the Smoked by Windows Phone Challenge will remain forever controversial, there is little doubt it made waves and got the OS noticed (hey, any publicity is good publicity). Guess we didn't figure Microsoft were tallying up every single win (and loss) though perhaps it shouldn't be a surprise. Here are the results:

  • Won - 40,522
  • Lost - 462

We're assuming that these numbers are just for the US at the various Microsoft Stores and don't include the expanded contest in places like Italy, Malaysia and Brazil (to name a few). Even Nokia picked up and ran with it in London.

If our math is correct, Windows Phone has won 98.87% of the challenges which is, umm, really high. Of course, we all know that the challenge favors Windows Phone as the tasks are predefined, but Microsoft has made some changes to make it more fair to challengers.

We're sure the naysayers will still cry foul though. Fair enough. The publicity stunt started a great conversation about the efficiency of using your smartphone for everyday tasks and put the spotlight on Windows Phone for once, something we rather enjoyed seeing.

We covered the unbranded Mozart Mango ROM the other day and now like dominoes, the rest are here too--well most of them. Yes folks, leaked "final" builds of Mango updates for numerous HTC devices are now available for your unauthorized usage, meaning you are taking matters into your own hands.

What these ROMs (7720.68) offer over the RTM build is of course updated radios, some HTC customizations, presumably specific APIs for things like the compass and other unique tweaks to improve the Mango experience. So here's what's available:

  • 7 Pro - RUU_Gold_S_HTC_Europe_3.02.401.01_Radio_5.69.09.29 a_22.50.50.21_Signed_GOLD_RELEASE.exe
  • Mozart - RUU_Mozart_S_HTC_Europe_4.06.401.00_5.69.09_RELEAS E.exe
  • Mozart - RUU_Mozart_S_HTC_RUS_4.06.411.00_5.69.09_RELEASE.exe
  • HD7 - RUU_Schubert_S_HTC_Europe_4.05.401.02_Radio_5.69.0 9.29a_22.50.50.21_Signed_SCHUBERT_RELEASE.exe
  • Trophy - RUU_Spark_S_HTC_Europe_4.06.401.00_5.69.09_RELEASE .exe
  • Trophy - RUU_Spark_W_S_VERIZON_WWE_2.01.605.04_2K_new_parti tion_RELEASE.exe

Most of those are Europe-only ROMs, so take heed but look at that last one--yup, for once Verizon HTC Trophy (review) users get something early! Head on over to XDA for all the goodness.

Title says it all: the final version of the Windows Phone 7 Developer Tools is slated for a September 16th release, giving, we imagine, a good 4-6 weeks before the finalized hardware goes on sale.

Needless to say, for developers and the Microsoft team, this is a huge milestone. Seeing as there have been no delays so far, Microsoft's execution of WP7 seems to be almost unprecedented.

Also worth noting is that the beta developer tools have been downloaded 300,000 times. Not too shabby.

Check out Brandon Watson giving the details on Microsoft's Channel 9.
