A closer look at the Lumia 950 XL camera

The Lumia 950 XL has the best camera Microsoft has ever created. That's what Juha Alakarhu tells us. He's responsible for imaging technology development in Phones at Microsoft. We spoke with him during the launch in New York City and he explained (and showed) the reasons behind the bold statement. Watch the video!

CES 2015 may be quiet for Windows Phone users, but Microsoft is here for the press, briefings and even a device showcase (we'll have more on that later today).

Windows Central was lucky enough to sit down with Juha Alakarhu, Head of Imaging Technology on the Lumia Windows Phones. Lumia Denim, Dynamic Flash, hardware, Lumia Camera 5.0 and more were all on the agenda for the 30-minute interview.

I and Myriam Joire (Engadget and Pebble alum) conducted the Juha interview, with Mark Guim doing his magic behind the camera. The talk was quite interesting: Myriam's an engineer by trade and we're both camera enthusiasts, enabling us to ask Juha some detailed questions about the PureView experience.

In an ongoing Q&A from Nokia's camera gurus, Juha Alakarhu and Eero Salmelin, who are now with Microsoft, information regarding what users should expect from the Lumia Cyan update has been revealed. The question answered dealt with photography, and specifically Nokia's latest high end Windows Phones, including the Verizon Lumia Icon, Lumia 930 and Lumia 1520.

Juha Alakarhu took to the query and revealed precisely what would be improved with the forthcoming firmware refresh, bundled with the Windows Phone 8.1 update.

Over the past year we’ve had a handful of chances to sit down with Nokia’s Juha Alakarhu. He is Nokia’s camera guru and is one of a handful of individuals responsible for Nokia’s dominance in mobile photography. We first saw him at CES last year where we learned about the future of optical zoom on mobile cameras and saw his Frankenstein 808 PureView.

We just had a chance to sit down with him again here at Nokia World 2013. We saw Nokia’s new app called Refocus, learned about RAW support for Lumia devices, and how Nokia Black is going to make your current smartphone better at pictures.

If there is one thing that is fun to look at, it’s just how massive the Nokia Lumia 1020’s 41MP BSI sensor is when compared to “normal” smartphone sensors.

Such is the case in the photo above, where you can see the Lumia 1020’s sensor, lenses and housing, along with “standard” 8MP sensors (Hint: the 1020’s are the big ones).

Last time we spoke with Juha Alakarhu we were left with a ton of information about Nokia’s cameras. We learned things like whether or not the Lumia 920 has an anti-aliasing filter and gained hints about the future. That future is partially here with the Lumia 925 having recently been announced. The head of imaging technologies at Nokia sat down with the Conversations blog to give more insight into the 925.

We get it, you get it, and everyone gets it, the camera on the Lumia 920 kicks ass. Whether devouring photons in low-light situations or reproducing great audio in videos, the 920 can handle it all with aplomb.

So here is another one of those videos showing off a killer feature unique to Nokia and their PureView technology, specifically the optical image stabilization. The video puts a Lumia 920 and a competitor on a hexacopter at the Nokia Lumia 920 launch event in India.

Although Nokia was not announcing any new Lumia Windows Phones here at CES 2013 in Las Vegas, they were still present here making sure people know that they mean business.

Luckily for us their photo guru, Juha Alakarhu, was there to take our questions regarding cameras and the future of mobile camerawork. Being in charge of Nokia’s imaging for their Lumia line gives him special insight into the field and since we’re photo enthusiasts ourselves, we had a lot to discuss.

Most of our conversation concentrated on chatting about their current cream of the crop, the Nokia Lumia 920 but who could also ignore that 808 Pureview with its 41MP image sensor? Not us. So both imaging technologies were discussed in tandem as well as what Nokia is thinking about what’s coming next. Join us after the break for some interesting tidbits behind Nokia’s photographic magic.
