lumia 800

The Lumia 800, a Windows Phone that launched back in 2011 was taken into the depths in Oulu, Finland on Saturday. Kiiminki Egyptian Timo was diving and handed the Lumia 800 to a friend to take photos for the trip album.

Unfortunately the ice broke and the friend (as well as the Windows Phone) fell into the water. One would immediately assume all is lost and a new smartphone will need to be purchased, but it booted up when recovered.

Nokia has begun rolling out its updated Camera Extras and Cinemagraph app to all Windows Phone users this month, with the Lumia 900, 800 and 710 smartphones receiving the new features to bring functionality up to speed with what Lumia owners can enjoy with Windows Phone 8 (see above shot of the Lumia 920).

While this doesn't add all functionality that's missing from the 7.8 update (compared to Windows Phone 8), it's a welcomed update from Nokia to bring Cinemagraph to those who chose first generation hardware.

Finnish lift and escalator company KONE has a BYOD (bring your own device) scheme in place that has seen more than 70 percent of employees use Nokia Lumia Windows Phones, according to reports in Australia. KONE provides employees with the choice on private phones or to choose a smartphone from a specified set of manufacturers, including Nokia, Samsung, HTC and Apple.

Update: Ah, as it turns out what is shown above is actually an app called Emotiboard (found here).  In other words, false alarm! Sorry folks.

It looks like Nokia is getting frisky as they're showing a glimpse of the Lumia 800 evidently with the upcoming Windows Phone 7.8 upgrade. The image above comes via their Facebook page and while it does not mention 7.8 directly it does show some new emoticons off. Those emoticons are not found in current 7.5 builds but they are found in Windows Phone 8 as we demonstrated in our video tour two weeks ago.

"What?! How do I use this alien technology?!"

The Nokia Lumia Windows Phones seem to be making the cameo rounds these days.  Earlier what appears to be a Lumia 800 showed up on the set of the upcoming movie "The Wolverine" and now a Nokia Lumia (we believe it's a 900 in costume) has been spotted in the U.S. television show, The Neighbors. What's great about the above capture is facial expressions and the ability to add an alien-related caption to bring it in line with the storyline from the show.

We've previously looked at Windows Phones being featured in a media, particularly the music video for Fun. - We Are Young, which we to this day still receive tips on. We're going to need OEMs and Microsoft to go out in a full scale attack with product placement when Windows Phone 8 launches.

The advertisements, not only for Windows 8 and Microsoft's Surface, but Windows Phone will be on the big screens, where couch potatoes will be able to enjoy the sight of new Lumias or HTC hardware. Who knows, Samsung might even ... actually, it was wishful thinking, I know.

Thanks, Steve, for sending in the tip!

Nokia were at the V Festival, but instead of simply enjoying the acts playing on-stage the company was out in force to challenge smartphone owners to see if their device could best a Windows Phone - the Lumia 800.

the V Festival, like many other music events held throughout the UK, is a golden opportunity for Windows Phone to be advertised to younger generations. Nokia has stated in the past they wish to rejuvenate their brand with youngsters, and being present at music events is definitely an effective game plan.

While we're all entirely focused on the latest and greatest Windows Phone hardware from manufacturers, we can't simply discard previous generation smartphones. The Lumia 800 has had its price tag slashed multiple times, and has been on special offer a fair few rounds. It's not shy to being made more attractive at a lower fee and Orange UK has taken it a step further by offering the Lumia 800 on Pay As You Go (PAYG) plans for just £159.

It's an absolute bargain if you're after a Windows Phone but don't care for the latest Apollo upgrade that's just around the corner - the Lumia 800 will not be receiving Apollo, but the handset will be hit with the Windows Phone 7.8 refresh that's on the horizon. Nokia has also announced they will be supporting the first Lumia family of Windows Phones with further firmware upgrades as well as service / app updates.

The title sounds familiar, right? It should, as this is the same Nokia offer as what we previously saw here in the UK. The manufacturer is offering Australian Lumia 800 and 900 owners the opportunity to claim a free pair of Purity HD headphones. If you have purchased a Lumia Windows Phone (either the 800 or 900) from today through to August 30th, you'll be eligible for a set of your own.

A new video purporedly shows limited NFC functionality on the Lumia 800

A video has appeared today (which we have been unable to verify for legitimacy) that reportedly shows a Nokia Lumia 800 making brief near-field communication (NFC) contact with a Nokia Play 360 (which supports NFC pairing). The phenomenon happens when toggling WiFi on and off, suggesting the powering of the NFC is connected somehow to WiFi.

The question naturally presents itself: does the Nokia Lumia 800 in fact support NFC? And will it get an update to enable this if so? The answer is a bit messy but we’ll just be brief here and say “no” and “no”.

For those looking for one heck of a deal, you may want to consider heading the online Microsoft Store for that Nokia Lumia 800 entertainment bundle. We first reported on this a few months ago where the four-part package fetched for $899.  No doubt a bit pricey but how does $599 sound?

To refresh your memory, the Nokia entertainment bundle comes with a Lumia800 (black or magenta) which is unlocked and tuned for AT&T’s 3G frequencies. You also get the Play 360 which is a portable, high-fidelity speaker that will allow you to stream your Lumia’s music via Bluetooth (and it has NFC for the future too). To top it off, you get a swanky Nokia Purity HD headset by Monster which for home use is an outstanding choice (they’re over the ear, so not as portable as the in-ear solution) and a Nokia Luna Bluetooth headset (reveiw)

The Play 360 ($150), Luna BT headset ($79) and Purity HD headset ($200) means you’re getting an unlocked Lumia 800 for just $170 which is pretty awesome if you ask us. We of course have a few Lumia 800s here but they have Euro bands making them less than optimal for use on AT&T. Because of that, we’re seriously contemplating throwing down some cash on this bad boy package. We do dearly love our Lumia 900 but the 800 is really the apex of design with the curved screen—truly a great phone.

The Lumia 800 features a 3.7” Super AMOLED screen with ClearBlack, 16GB of storage and an 8MP camera. It’s a solid phone and if 4G LTE is nowhere near you and you don’t use the somewhat gimmicky front-facing camera, picking up the 800 contract-free is a solid option.

We think this drop actually happened a few weeks ago but regardless, head over to the Microsoft Store to take a look. Remember, only black and magenta are available. For those curious, the "magenta" for the Lumia 800 is much more red than pink--it's okay for you guys too. And no, Amazon surprisingly has not yet matched this price but we’ll keep a watch if that happens. Thanks, Blitz_Empire, for the tip

We've covered a number of deals the past few days and it's certainly a coincidence that most (if not all) have been Nokia Windows Phones. We've got yet another offer to reveal to you should you reside in the UK. High street retailer Phones 4u has the exclusive white Lumia 800 listed at just £15/mo with Orange.

The Lumia 800 is bundled at no extra charge, and the 24-month plan includes 100 minutes, 3000 texts and 100MB of data. It doesn't sound a lot if you're a power user, but it's the Dolphin package from Orange so one can always upgrade should they wish to do so.

The Phones 4u Lumia 800 product page shows a 3.8 / 5 average customer rating with 77% recommending it. Be sure to head on over to the retail website for more information. Note that Nokia have halted the free Monster headphones offer.

Source: Phones 4u; Thanks, Mark, for the heads up!
