Phablet

I reviewed the Lumia 1520 and even did a follow up on living with the monster 6-inch Windows Phone. Today, I’m taking a look at the brand new Lumia 1320, a more budget friendly version of the high end Nokia device. Running between $350 and $400 off contract in various markets, including China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore, the Lumia 1320 looks to be a winner for those wanting something a bit larger.

My Lumia 1320 just showed up, so we figured we would show you folks around the latest Lumia to grace our site. So grab a hot coffee and watch the unboxing video with a quick device tour. We’ll even throw in some high quality photos as well.

Although Nokia had a lot to announce a few weeks ago in Abu Dhabi, one of those devices not mentioned was the Nokia Lumia 929, destined for Verizon. That device is said to be in carrier testing right now and it could be released between Thanksgiving and the beginning of next year.

The Nokia Lumia 929 is a custom phone built for Verizon, featuring a 5-inch 1080P AMOLED display. It’s in many ways just a bigger, more powerful Lumia 928, as it features a Quad-Core Snapdragon 800 CPU and updated internals.

Now, high quality photos of this device have been revealed to Windows Phone Central and we have the inside scoop of Verizon’s flagship Lumia.

Nokia World will soon be upon us (in fact, we're already on our way out there), but that's not halting leaks and more from being published. Evleaks, a Twitter profile which has been fairly accurate in the past, has posted what are reported to be specifications of the Lumia 1520 - aka. "Nokia Bandit." While we'll be able to bring you the announcements, hands-on and more from the event floor, what are we looking at here?

On a slow Sunday we have some slow news coming out, including this rear render of the Nokia Lumia 929 destined for Verizon. Yesterday we had the front side leak and now you can see it juxtaposed against its rear.

Anything else new to report? Not really, just that the 1080P Windows Phone 8 device will arrive in Red too in addition to White and Black, which should be a nice change.  Other than that, we still have the 20 MP PureView camera on the back and presumably the size is at least 5-inches for the display, though other specific details remain elusive.

If you guys haven’t heard, Nokia is working on a new device for the release of GDR3. The Lumia 1520 will be a phone of many firsts on Windows Phone. It will come with a 1080p display, quad core processor, and much more when it launches sometime in the near horizon – possibly early November on AT&T.

The device will also be 6-inches, making it the largest Windows Phone ever. Devices in that range straddle the line between smartphones and tablets, so naturally the media attached the name “phablets” to machines like that. Most of you really dislike that word. And so might Nokia.

Nokia is reportedly preparing to launch the massive 6-inch Nokia Lumia 1520 this fall and Windows Phone Central can now bring you a little more information about the device.

Yesterday, EvLeaks claimed that the Lumia 1520 will “launch” on September 26th, though we understand that to be incorrect. The device is still planned to be announced on this date but it won’t launch until early November on AT&T. That makes much more sense as GDR3 is still being finalized and GDR2 hasn’t even finished rolling out yet.

As reported earlier, the phone will feature a 20 MP PureView camera (dual shot: 16 MP + 5 MP), Snapdragon 800 CPU, 32 GB of internal storage (microSD on the side for expansion) and a stellar 1080P HD display.

Nokia Lumia 1520 rumored to launch September 26

When the Nokia Lumia 1520 launches it will be the largest Windows Phone device ever. It will be so big that it will sit comfortable in the category of smartphones known as “phablets”. Devices that are much larger than your average smartphone, but smaller than a mini tablet. It will go head to head with the very successful Samsung Galaxy Note devices running Android. These are brave new waters for the Windows Phone platform. And it looks like you might only 15 days away from holding it in your hands.

Since today there’s less news about the Microsoft-Nokia acquisition floating around, we can return to business as usual: writing about Windows Phones. Specifically, the Nokia Lumia 1520 aka the rumored 6-inch device that is expected to launch in November.

There have been two high profile leaks of this device lately, including a real photo of the 1520 and a screenshot from the 1080P display revealed by @evleaks.

One of our Windows Phone Central Forum members, Rohan Vg, threw his modest PhotoShop skills at the problem and combined those two images into one (seen above). It gives us a better look at what the finalized device may look like.

Seeing as it’s the weekend, a holiday one for those in the States, it seems appropriate now to highlight some guesstimation on the size of the Nokia Lumia 1520. Sure, we’ll know more in the coming weeks on the actual dimensions but there’s no harm in adding a little math to give a rough idea.

Revealed in a photo earlier this week, the Nokia Lumia 1520 was placed next to the Lumia 1020 for size comparison. Windows Phone Central can now confirm that the photo is legitimate through a second source who attested to its authenticity. Based off of that image, forum member Cornelius took a break from his bachelor thesis to calculate the Lumia 1520’s exact size.

The first purported photo of the rumored Nokia Lumia 1520 Windows Phone with a 6-inch 1080P display

At the end of September, Nokia is reportedly going to reveal at least two new devices here in New York: their Windows 8 RT tablet, codenamed Sirius and the Nokia Lumia 1520 phablet.

The Lumia 1520 will feature a huge six-inch 1080P display, a polycarbonate body (not metal) with a 20 MP PureView camera akin to the Lumia 925’s design, specifications that we revealed last week from our verified sources. The device will also feature a quad-core Snapdragon CPU and Windows Phone 8 GDR3 for the new 1080P support.

The image above was leaked to us and while we cannot confirm it, we have a suspicion that is accurate. For one, it comes with what looks like an optional back case with a front cover to protect the display. We also wouldn’t be surprised if it adds Qi wireless charging capability as well. It's placed next to what appears to be a Lumia 1020 for size comparison.

Smartphone insiders @evleaks tweeted a simple, but straight-forward message about the Nokia 6-inch Windows Phone 8 device codenamed "Bandit," denoting that it will officially be called the Nokia Lumia 1520. @evleaks has a longtime track record of being correct with the information they release, so we think the chances are pretty good that we'll be hearing the name Lumia 1520 soon.

Update 8:15PM: Windows Phone Central can now confirm a few things about this story. The phablet will be a 6 inch, 1080p, quad core device with gdr3 and a 20MP camera. It will be reportedly very thin with a slight camera hump akin to the Lumia 925. The tablet, a separate device, will be RT based.

We have it on good authority that Nokia is planning an event for the end of next month. It’s expected to take place in New York City over two days, September 26th and the 27th. What’s happening? We’ve seen leaks for a Nokia branded tablet running Windows RT, but we’ve also heard rumors of larger smartphones on the horizon.

Sources with Reuters are backing up that idea of a “phablet” coming soon.

The Verge is reporting that sources have told them that Nokia will be releasing a phone with a 6-inch screen by the end of the year. The device, which is currently being tested by AT&T under the moniker "Bandit," will be the first Windows Phone-powered phablet, a device that bridges the gap between a phone and a tablet. Back in July, we saw a leaked photo of a 6-inch digitizer for such a device, so this isn't completely shocking, but some more details have been revealed.

Nokia has been rumoured to be planning a Windows 8 tablet along with a "phablet" running Windows Phone. Both products have never seen the light of day, but we could well be getting closer to seeing a large Windows Phone from Nokia, if the above image published on Chinese website Weibo is anything to go by. We know many consumers will be looking forward to see just what could come of this, especially if we're to follow the route of the Samsung Galaxy Note.

Oh how we hate Mondays (insert Garfield cartoon here). Looks like we may be spending more time than we want debunking rumors rather than posting confirmed news, but the internet is aflutter these days with numerous new Nokia speculation. Because an inbound 41MP Windows Phone just isn’t enough…

The latest rumor that just won’t go away use one of the most detested words we can think of: phablet. Typing it just makes us recoil for some unknown linguistic reason. Phablets are that new category of device that is combination of ‘phone’ and ‘tablet’, meaning devices with a 5” screen or bigger—give or take. It’s exemplified by popular devices like the Samsung Galaxy Note I and II, which ironically have beaten most analysts expectations by actually resonating very well with the public.

Update: Our sources tell us that this photo is not accurate and that currently Nokia does not have any 'phablet' plans. Sorry folks!

File this under hopeful thinking, but a new photo of the alleged Nokia ‘Phablet’ (that is, a device small enough to be a phone, but big enough to be a small tablet) has supposedly been revealed. The photo comes from one Dahny el Perro, who attached the photo to a Tweet and which was later posted on the fan site NokiaPhones.fr.

In the photo, we see what looks to be a Lumia-like Cyan device in the background. With the photo zoomed in, it gets very blurry but you can clearly see three rows of Tiles, including the small, medium and double-wide ones we currently have. The difference is of course that added third row, which would be needed for 1080P display that this thing supposedly packs.

Earlier in the week Bloomberg stated that HTC had scrapped plans for a 5” or higher Windows Phone due to the inability of the OS to scale up to 1080P. Sure, the device could pass muster with 720P or 768P but for a major device like that to hit now or in early 2013 would behind the competition.

Now it’s being reported that Microsoft’s Ballmer met directly with the CEO of HTC, Peter Chou, when he passed through Taiwan recently. In of itself this is not news as the two mega CEOs reportedly exchange emails and meet several times a year. But in this case, the limiting resolution of the Windows Phone 8 and presumably other areas of contention were brought up.
