sickhead

Here at Windows Phone Central, we’re all big fans of strategy title ARMED! from Dallas-based indie developer Sickhead Games. Among the game’s many qualities are sharp 3D graphics, intuitive controls, online multiplayer, and of course, plenty of strategic depth. Not only that, but Sickhead has regularly updated the game since its release, tweaking and improving a variety of elements with each patch.

The latest update, version 1.6 is no less impressive than previous updates. The update just went live so look for it pushing out any time.  We've got the full list of changes to share with you, the most impressive of which is the new price: $2.99, down from $3.99. That and more ARMED! news after the break.

Just before summer started, Dallas-based Sickhead Games announced they would be porting their popular indie strategy title ARMED! to Windows 8 and iOS. They weren’t lying, as ARMED! Preview is now available on the Windows 8 store.

Why the ‘Preview’ moniker? As most PC users know, Windows 8 hasn’t been officially released yet. Lots of people are running preview builds in the wild though, and ARMED! Preview is meant for them. The build is free and basically functions as a public beta; you can submit feedback through the Sickhead website. Not a bad move, as it’s best to test online multiplayer games as much as possible before you start charging for them. Also note that the promised cross-platform multiplayer between ARMED! on Windows 8 and Windows Phone has not gone live yet, but it’s still in the works.

In other ARMED! news, Tom Spilman from Sickhead (pictured with a goatee that puts my own to shame!) recently guest-starred on episode 074 of The Metro Developer Show podcast.
Tom shares tons of great development details about the game, widely considered to be the most technically impressive game on Windows Phone. The podcast also has lots of general Windows Phone discussion, so it's definitely worth a listen.

Windows 8 users: get ARMED! Preview here. As for Windows Phone gamers (the finest folks around), the mobile version of ARMED! costs $3.99 and offers a free trial with full multiplayer support. Grab it here on the Marketplace.

Sickhead Games’ ARMED! stands out as one of the most impressive indie games in the Windows Phone lineup – in fact, it even outdoes just about every Xbox Live title in graphics, UI, and multiplayer features. Even the title is extra exciting, with not only capital letters, but also an exclamation point! Why Microsoft hasn’t picked up ARMED! for Xbox Live status remains a mystery, but Sickhead continues to support their title, both with updates and plans to expand to other platforms as well.

ARMED! is the best multiplayer strategy game on Windows Phone, hands-down. True, there is very little competition on that front, but the game would be impressive regardless. Even better, Sickhead Games has just published the massive ARMED! version 1.2 update.  Among the changes are Fast App Switching support, a new multiplayer matchmaking lobby, Ranked correspondence matches, an in-game news ticker, more language translations, and lots more. Having spent some time with the update prior to its release, I must say that all of the additions and tweaks make for an incredibly deep and polished experience.

Armed! developer asks for user input on balance issues

Development screen

Armed! is an excellent turn-based strategy game from Dallas, TX-based indie developer Sickhead Games. The game’s standout feature has to be its online multiplayer, which offers both asynchronous and real-time options, plus ranked and unranked games... Basically everything gamers want from mobile Xbox Live titles but the big MS doesn’t want to give us for some reason.

Of course, with any complex competitive multiplayer game, balance issues are bound to pop up after release. If left unattended, poor game balance can cause players to lose interest and move on to other titles. Thankfully Sickhead has caught wind of a few such imbalances and is already working to correct them.

Balance issues:

  • Tanks are being used too much
  • HoverTanks and Strikers aren’t as useful and cost effective as intended
  • Some matches are lasting longer than intended. 20 minutes should be the maximum.

Sickhead have explained these issues and some possible solutions in great detail on their website. They’re also looking for community input, so make sure you stop by and offer your suggestions or hit them up from WPCentral’s Armed! forum thread.

Armed! costs $3.99 and there is a free trial, complete with multiplayer! Get it here on the Marketplace.

As you might have heard, indie strategy title Armed! is one amazing game. With great graphics, an amazing UI, deep strategic gameplay, and online multiplayer to boot, Armed! is heads and tails above most Xbox Live games (and certainly Fusion: Sentient). What’s more, Dallas-based developer Sickhead Games plans to show Armed! lots of support, starting with today’s update.

The Armed! version 1.1 update consists primarily of bug fixes (full list past the break). As of now, most known issues have been addressed. I can enter my Scoreloop information without the game crashing now, so that’s one improvement. A version 1.2 update with Fast App Switching support is also on the way. I’m a bit surprised they didn’t enable the feature in this patch (it’s beyond easy), but apparently Sickhead was concerned about locking out Nodo users (do they still exist?).
