unboxing

The Lumia 520 was in many ways just as iconic as the Lumia 920 but for very different reasons. The unassuming low-end device took the Windows Phone by storm, quickly becoming one of the top-selling devices ever for the fledgling OS. Fast forward to 2014 and low-end Windows Phones dominate the scene.

The Lumia 535 is the first Windows Phone with the Microsoft banner emblazoned across it instead of Nokia. The phone likely emerged during Nokia's tenure, but Microsoft is taking the credit on the packaging. Budget phones are tough to write about, but the Lumia 535 appears to get so much right when compared to the Lumia 530 and Lumia 635 it is hard to not get a little excited about it.

Yesterday, AT&T began to sell two new Windows Phones: the HTC One for Windows and the Nokia Lumia 830. We picked up the latter phone from our local store, where they had a few in stock and figured we would do an ol'fashioned unboxing and tour.

Perhaps what makes the AT&T Lumia 830 a little bit more interesting is that for a limited time, it comes with a free Fitbit Flex activity tracker – a $99 value. The Fitbit and Lumia 830 come bundled together in a larger box, making it quite the care package for $99 with contract ($450 without).

Late last night, Microsoft in a surprise move announced the Band, a new health and fitness wearable that includes a heart rate monitor, UV sensor, Cortana integration and a gorgeous color touch display.

Perhaps even more impressive, the $199 is available today from Microsoft Stores and online. Stock is limited and, unfortunately, the Band is U.S. only for now as Microsoft tests out the waters.

I managed to pick one up this morning. Here is a full unboxing, tour, and how the Band interacts with Windows Phone.

On October 9, 2014, Lenovo announced a series of new computing devices in London. Perhaps the most interesting one was the ultrathin Ultrabook the Yoga 3 Pro. Weighing in at just 2.6 pounds and 12.8 mm thin, it sure looked like a drool worth laptop for 2014.

Notwithstanding the $1,349 premium price tag, the Yoga 3 Pro is ushering in a new era of super-thin laptops due to its new 'watchband' hinge and Intel Core M Broadwell processor. Our 256 GB version in Sliver just showed up two-weeks ahead of initial estimates. So, without further ado, here is our unboxing and quick tour.

Does the Lumia 830 live up to its name and is it a worthy upgrade? The answer may surprise you.

Last week I showed you in detail the Nokia Lumia 735 'selfie' phone, including my initial thoughts. While I begin wrapping up a full review for that phone later this week, the Lumia 830 arrived on my doorstep.

Dubbed 'the affordable flagship' by Microsoft, the Lumia 830 has a lot going for it, including a much sleeker design than its more powerful Lumia 930 sibling.

So how good is the Lumia 830? Check out my unboxing video, hardware tour, and first impressions of the latest Lumia phone to hit the market.

Back at the beginning of September, Microsoft pulled the curtain back on three new Lumia phones: the Lumia 730/ Lumia 735 and the Lumia 830. Just four weeks later and those devices can be found at various retailers and carriers around the world.

Today I am taking a closer look at the Lumia 735 including an unboxing video, sample camera images, high-resolution photos of the phone, and my first thoughts on the successor to the Lumia 720.

Earlier this week, we reported that BLU is selling their new Win JR Windows Phone direct through Amazon.com (direct link). The fully unlocked, dual-SIM device is the first Windows Phone from the fledgling company and at $89 and no contract, it seems too good to be true. At the time, we noted how ours was on the way and sure enough, Amazon delivered it on time today.

So, how good can a $90 Windows Phone be? Watch our video unboxing and hands on to find out. Spoiler alert: it gives Lumias a run for their money.

The Lumia 520 is going to go down as the phone that drove Windows Phone in emerging markets and for those who want a budget phone. Therefore, it should be no surprise to see Microsoft pick up Nokia's reins with the Lumia 530, which is just now launching globally.

I managed to get my hands on a brand new bright green Lumia 530 and in the following video, I talk about the features, specs and my first impressions. As it turns out, it very much reminds me of the Lumia 620 in terms of design, and the OS is surprisingly zippy considering the price range for this phone.

Taking a look at Nokia's problem-solving Lumia 525

Last year, Nokia introduced the Lumia 520, a lost-cost solution to those who want a Windows Phone in emerging markets. As it turns out, demand was much higher than anyone anticipated. Nearly a year later and the 520 is one of the best-selling Windows Phones around. It’s a great low-risk way to experience Windows Phone and it opens the door to higher end options. But if the Lumia 520 had one flaw, it was the amount of RAM.

Windows Phone 8 can run easily on 512 MB devices, but some higher end games (and a handful of apps) need some good memory optimization before they can run smoothly. That usually happens, but it can take months after the initial release. Microsoft is confident this will go away as developers target 512 MB devices in the future, but up until now, there hasn’t been a low-cost 1 GB Lumia to get around this problem.

The Lumia 525 fixes that by simply bumping the RAM to 1 GB. So, can lightning strike twice for Nokia? Watch my unboxing and first impressions of Nokia's device to find out.

I reviewed the Lumia 1520 and even did a follow up on living with the monster 6-inch Windows Phone. Today, I’m taking a look at the brand new Lumia 1320, a more budget friendly version of the high end Nokia device. Running between $350 and $400 off contract in various markets, including China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore, the Lumia 1320 looks to be a winner for those wanting something a bit larger.

My Lumia 1320 just showed up, so we figured we would show you folks around the latest Lumia to grace our site. So grab a hot coffee and watch the unboxing video with a quick device tour. We’ll even throw in some high quality photos as well.

Lenovo's new Miix2 ($299) tablet is now available and here's what its' like

Last week we showed you the Venue 8 Pro, Dell’s first foray into the 8-inch tablet world running Windows 8.1. This week, we have Lenovo’s answer: the Miix2. Available at Amazon and costing $299 with 32GB of internal storage (64 GB optional available), these two devices have more in common than differences. Still, there are a few variances worth noting.

Head past the break for our unboxing and quick video tour of Lenovo’s 8-inch competitor. Want to see it against the Dell? Stay tuned as we’re testing them out now.

Dell's first 8-inch Windows 8.1 tablet hits the market

With Windows 8.1 unleashed by Microsoft a couple of weeks ago, it’s about time we started seeing some new hardware. One of the big new areas for Microsoft is in the 8-inch tablet range, where Apple and Android have been fighting it out for some time now.

Sure, Microsoft had the Acer W3 but with its craptacular display, they needed some more finesse from their other OEMs.

Enter Dell with their recently announced Venue 8 Pro tablet. Running full Windows 8.1 with an Atom processor, we have to wonder if the device has what it takes. Head past the break to see our unboxing video and first impressions!

Yesterday, AT&T and Nokia released the slim and mostly-metal Lumia 925, bringing along with it one of the nation’s largest LTE networks at a $99 price point ($429 off contract). Today, we go hands on with the latest Nokia offering and come away impressed.

Featuring 16GB of internal storage (12GB available), a 4.5-inch AMOLED display with ClearBlack and an 8.7MP PureView camera with that extra lens-element for improved sharpness, there’s a lot to like about the Lumia 925. The phone is cool-to-the-touch due to the aluminum frame and it comes in elegant black (as opposed to T-Mobile’s brighter white offering). The OS is build 1328 (GDR2) and like other AT&T GDR2 devices, unfortunately lacks Data Sense.

Another month and another Lumia device is ready to launch from our favorite Finnish Windows Phone manufacturer. This time around it is the Lumia 625, an expansion of the Lumia 6xx series including its smaller cousin the 4-inch Lumia 620.

The Lumia 625 is Nokia’s attempt to continue to hammer the entry level market for smartphones by giving users a choice in design and features. While not as feature packed as the 8xx or higher Lumia series, the 620 and 625 offer some premium features for a low cost.

The big selling point of the Lumia 625? Its massive 4.7-inch 800x480 IPS display, which contrasts dramatically with the 3.8-inch Lumia 620’s screen. In the same series you have Nokia’s largest and smallest display offerings, which is quite interesting.

Head past the break to see our unboxing video, first impressions and some high quality photos of this compelling Windows Phone.

We’re all pumped for the Xbox One’s impending launch. We still don’t know exactly when the console will appear in stores other than the month of November. It must be getting close at any rate because Microsoft has just released an official unboxing video as well as three accessory-specific videos.

Normally I don’t care for unboxing videos, but this one is an exception. For one: it gives us a nice look at how the Xbox one’s components relate to each other in size, not to mention the ports on the back and side of the console. All good things.

The real news however is what comes inside the box. It’s got all the stuff we expected plus one item we didn’t… a Chat Headset! And the video reveals that the Chat Headset won’t just come with the “Day One Edition” of the console. It will be included with every system. That’s a victory for communication and teamwork in Xbox One games!
