updates

The other day we reviewed the Windows Phone 8 game Cartoon Ball. It's an entertaining, casual game where you blast a blue ball into a basket. To keep things challenging you'll have to navigate around various obstacles along the way.

The game has potential but is held back by a few performance bugs and the lack of a trial version. The latest update takes Cartoon Ball addresses the bugs but the game still lacks a trial version.

Back at Casual Connect in August, we interviewed German developer Handy Games about some of their upcoming Windows Phone and Windows 8 titles: 1941: Frozen Front and Townsmen. Those two fine-looking titles are still in development, but the game maker has something else to tide us over right now.

Handy Games has just updated both mobile Windows versions of their 2D shoot-em-up Aces of the Luftwaffe, right alongside their Android counterpart. One of our favorite shmups on Windows Phone 8, Aces of the Luftwaffe is free to play. This update adds a bunch of new content that will keep shooting game fans busy for hours.

We first discovered unconventional platformer/puzzle game Eyez back in June, right around E3 time when we interviewed the developer. The game instantly caught my eyes with its beautiful hand-drawn Asian artwork and striking use of colors. It also packs some highly creative puzzle mechanics that you don’t see every day. Oh, and it runs on both Windows Phone 7 and 8.

Since Eyez’ release, developer Hua “Rex” Chen has steadily updated it with tweaks and compatibility improvements. The latest update even adds better touch controls. Head past the break for more update details, screenshots, and more!

You've got your customary professional sports listed (NFL, NBA, NFL, etc) along with collegiate sports, the PGA, and MLS but now NASCAR is showing up on the list.

Last month, the Windows 8 version of Rayman Jungle Run received a sizable update. Ubisoft added 20 new levels to their beautiful 2D platformer, and for free. New levels are all very well and good, but what about the Windows Phone 8 version of the game? We assumed it would receive the same update at some point, but Ubisoft couldn’t confirm it for us.

Looks like we assumed correctly! The Windows Phone 8 version of Rayman Jungle Run just got updated with 20 new levels. The update pushes the game’s download size from 49 MB to 78 MB, but that’s still not a bad size for a AAA downloadable title. Head past the break for details and screenshots of the new stages.

The most notable fix corrects the bug that caused lockscreen updates to not match the weather information. You also have Simplified Chines and Hungarian languages added and a optional usage data setting.

The story of MOGA Pro Controller support for Windows Phone 8 has consisted of little else other than disappointment in the months following its March announcement. Microsoft touted Windows Phone 8’s support for the peripheral at the Game Developer Conference, where we actually played Drift Mania Championship 2 using the controller.

Somehow, the MOGA-enabled version of the game didn’t become available until June, several months after the controller arrived in stores. And since then, exactly zero Windows Phone games and emulators have included MOGA support. It’s like the March announcement was just a cruel joke.

The cruelty of that joke has just diminished, because a second game now supports the controller! Spectral Souls, the massive strategy RPG from HyperDevBox has been updated to work with the MOGA Pro Controller. We also know of at least one other app that will definitely support it upon release. Details after the break!
