Valentines Day

Windows Phone Central App Roundup: Valentine's Day Apps

For those who have been out of town or simply hiding under a rock, this Friday is Valentine’s Day. If you have a significant other and have completely forgotten about this “special” day, we have a few Windows Phone apps that may keep you out of the doghouse.

This week’s Windows Phone Central Roundup falls a few days early, to help those who suffer from losing track of time and possibly saving countless relationships globally. Quick disclaimer though, we don’t guarantee any of these Windows Phone apps will save you from sleeping on the couch, save you from the silent treatment or successfully wooing your partner if you have completely forgotten about Valentine's Day.

We’ll touch on a few greeting card apps that may give you a little more time to run down to the local gift store, an app that will let you order flowers from your Windows Phone, a shopping app from a merchant that offers overnight delivery and a dining app just in case you forgot to make reservations.

Microsoft has kicked off a festive campaign for its Bing search engine. With Valentine's Day soon approaching, the male populous will ascend on these mighty portals of vast searchfulness for ideas on how to either woo a desired female, or make their way out of the dog house. Taking advantage of the popular celebration of love, the company is asking "what do you consider the most important quality in a partner?"

Michael Stroh has published an article on the Windows Phone team blog about a competition they're running for those who are unhappy with their Android handset or who simply desire a Windows Phone. To enter, simply follow @windowsphone on Twitter, then tweet one of the following (US only):

  • Option 1: If #DroidRage is breaking your heart, tweet a "Dear Droid" breakup letter with the hashtag #DumpingMyDroid.
  • Option 2: If you already have a Windows Phone (or just want one), tweet why you love it with the hashtag #ILoveWindowsPhone.

Be sure to enter quickly as the competition will end midnight on Valentine's Day. Two winners will be announced once the closing date has passed, who will both receive a Windows Phone (might not be a Nokia Lumia pictured above), one annual Zune Pass, and one annual Xbox LIVE Gold membership. Check out the rules on the article, link below.

Nokia sends a Valentine's to AT&T

We like it when companies have a sense of humor, so it's with great interest to see Nokia getting into the whole Valentine's Day thing with this little treat.

Paul Thurrott posted pics of a Valentine's Day "gift" from Nokia to AT&T and it features the Lumia 900:

"I just want to let you know how much I appreciated you. I know we've been on and off for awhile now, but I promise you I'm not going anywhere. I've been into you for a long time now and I'm so happy we're rekindling what we had. You're like nobody else--special in every way--and when we're together, magic happens. So to show you how much I care, I have something just for you. It's going to drive you wild. But until then, enjoy this little treat and get excited for what's to come. Let's make some memories. Love, Nokia."

Okay, that's almost a little creepy. Still hilarious too though.

Both Nokia and Microsoft revealed during the 2012 International Consumer Electronics Show that the Lumia 800 Windows Phone would become available through Microsoft retail stores early this year. No specifics were mentioned during CES but rumors have popped up on the radar showing the Lumia 800 will be available on February 14th. The price? $899.

Now before you go into sticker shock, the rumors have Microsoft offering the 800 bundled with the Nokia Play 360 Bluetooth Speaker, the Nokia Purity HD headphones, and a Bluetooth headset. The accessories tip the scales at about $400 so the overall price is in the ballpark and would price the Lumia at around $500ish.

No word if this is an "in store" only item or if the Lumia 800 bundle will be offered online through Microsoft. You also have the question whether or not Microsoft will be offering the Lumia 800 outside the bundle.  One would hope this bundle is targeted at the Valentine's Day shopper and we'll see the Lumia 800 offered all by its lonesome shortly after the initial release..
